They can change their path in life to some degree. Unfortunately this time they have rushed it, and not consulted the people it affects most close to them. It will never messy for a while, but I'm sure they will negotiate a compromise.

I suppose it's like any long family tradition where the children are expected to follow their parents footsteps. And yes I wouldn't like it.

But aren’t they brought up knowing that the life they will lead will be a different path?

I dunno. It’s not like they suddenly wake up and ta-dah you’re Queen/King and your life is no longer your own. They are broken in at an early age with the knowledge of their future destiny, so they have awhile to get their head around it.
