I suppose directing our anger at him stops us asking why the elderly are not cared for by any of us in society.

Good to have a devil to punch.

I didn't see it on Panorama but read about it in the Mail Online.

He should have his eyes dug out with a hot poker - filthy horrible cesspit of an individual.

What was it he got ? 14 months ? The son of a bitch should have been burned at the stake

i'd like to do a lot more than just puch the devil that treated that poor lady in that manner thats for sure

sadly we live in a world where homes are a needed as we are not in a position to give full care to the members of our families thst need it every day

my grandmother went into a home for respite care whilst my mother had a holiday after 2 full years of caring for her but luckily she was treated with wonderful care but i can tell you now had anyone treated her in that manner i scare myself with the thoughts of what i would of done to them

she also spent her final month in a care home as my mother was not medically able to care for her in her final days

sometimes care homes are a necessity not an easy choice

we live in a world where money is essential to life and so work is needed to be done to earn it or else i'm sure more would look after their sick family members than do already

personally though i would rather my boys pop me in a home than let their lives be ruled by my care i want them to live full and happy lives not ones filled with wiping my backside but hopefully i'll pop my clogs long before thats ever an issue

our gran is in a care home, she has dementia and went downhill very quickly, she loves being there and has everything she needs including friends who are in the same situation. What happened to this lady is horrific but we cant put all care homes into one awful basket, some are very good

I think its rather naive to suggest that the standard of care our relatives would receive would be of a higher quality should they be cared for by a family member in their own homes. Most of us aren't trained carers, do not have adapted homes to care for very infirm or disabled elderly people, cannot provide a safe environment, most people have to work so cannot provide round the clock supervision and the stress of having to live in that environment, and a carers job is a hard one and affects all family members which could lead to frustrations and a decline in appropriate care. The rosy picture of elderly relatives living within a family with differing age groups in total harmony, receiving excellent care, is not always a realistic one.

Many care homes are excellent, trained staff with the ability to give specialist care in a safe environment. And elderly relatives b eing amongst people of a similar age in an environment which suits their needs.

Sadly there are care homes who employ staff who do not receive adequate training and don't have the attributes a good carer should. Cleaning techniques are not adhered to, hygiene is not the priority it should be which could put residents at risk of infection which would rapidly spread and lead to outbreaks, equipment is not kept in good working order, the list could go on.

some carers are paid a minimum wage, if you pay peanuts, you're gonna get monkeys.

It would be nice to see carers receive indepth training in care for the elderly and the environment they live in and paid a salary which befits the specialist care they are expected to provide.

Sadly it so often comes down to money. If an elderly person can afford to pay the £600 a week approx it costs for a good private care home then all well and good, lots cannot afford that and are cared for in a council run home who do not pay their staff or train them as well and this reduces the quality of care provided

and to all those wonderful care workers who work irregular shifts, weekends and bank holidays long hours -- cover hours because colleagues dont have the dedication that you have, earn little more than minimum wage whilst the owner of your establishment drives round in his 60K car and spends 3 months a year in the carribean Please Please Please keep up the good work you are true angels

- my mum is in a care home for dementia patients and she is very happy there, in her own little world. The staff are wonderful and love her like she's their own. They're not all bad.

My ex mother-in-law has dementia, has had a leg amputated and my ex-husband has moved into her home to look after her for fear of this type of treatment.

He has to work so pays for a career to look after her whilst he's at work. He doesn't trust the minimum wage earning council careers, so picked his own. Family also pop in during the day to keep her company.

My dad was the carer for my mother but would put her in respite care now and then for a rest...she received excellent care.

This home had an excellence rating, the daughter did all she could, you don't expect care assistants to harm those in their care.

Then again you don't expect teachers to be paedophiles, doctors to murder their patients, parents to harm their kids...there are evil people in all areas of life, you can't demonise them all and talks of "cutting off hands" is macho postering and sounds rather juvenile in my opinion.

my wife befriended an old lady at the bingo about 6 years ago , they became good friends but she and her husband are in bad health now , she's in a wheelchair and hubby has really bad dementure, we care for them as they have no family, its hard and even though there not family, we'd hate it for anyone to purposely harm them

The carer in question has been prosecuted and jailed.

In his native country he was a qualified nurse who was head hunter for a job here in the UK in that care home.

Though it paid more than he would have received in his country of origin he only got paid around 6 pounds an hour and his nursing qualification was not recognized.

I am not excusing him for his abuse of his patients, but what kind of society do we live in that has so devalued the care of our most vulnerable that we won't pay a decent wage to the carers, that very few British people will take the work, that we are happy to strip other countries of qualified medical professionals and then devalue them when they get here?

Shocking, disgusting and totally wrong but it is NOT the norm.

I work as a care worker for the elderly in there homes and know the stress and pressure the carers work under.

You get good and bad in all professions, in all walks of life.

Sadly that's how our world is

We leave the most vulnerable in our society, the youngest, the oldest and those with disabilites to be cared for by the worst trained and worst paid. We cut inspections, and put care provision in the hands of the private sector, then rant when abuse happens.

You get what you are willing to pay for.

while i agree with most of what you say jem , i do not agree with the line of your post.

I get paid not much over the min wage but the amount of pay i get has no bearing or effect to the level of care i give to the people i care for.

Oh i would hate you to think thats what i meant, i was a nursery teacher before the boys,...the thing is people shouldn't have to work for such low wages do such vital jobs, and society should value there work rather than ignoring it then getting on their high horse when something like this happens.

Value care work and care workers...that would go a long way to protecting the elderly.

That was my viewpoint. It's easy to have a knee jerk reaction to cases like this but not everyone is bad.

maybe the we that rant when abuse happens are the we that have done thier upmost to make sure that their loved ones are recieving the best care possible so when they see this going on are horrified by it

maybe

i'm one of the lucky ones to of never been in a position of having to pop a loved one in a care home so have no idea of what making those kind of decisions is like but yet i'm still horrified by the treatment dished out by the odd sick individual that goes under the title of carer

i do not blame poor pay or bad working conditions, i think the blame lays firmly at the door of the person dishing out the abuse, to my mind their actions can not be excused full stop

there are some wonderful people out there that work in the care sector and i do nothing but admire them but sadly there is the odd one that slips through the net but i have no idea how on earth that net could be tightened to catch them as abusers are incredibly slippery characters that will wriggle through the smallest or cracks

Unfortunatly the elderly are more likely to be abused at home if cared by relative, especially if they have some form of dementia. incredibly difficult to life with anyone who has become unrecognisable

As another poster has stated its very common for staff in care homes (and hosptials) to be hit punched, spat on, verbally abused and injured as part of a normal shift. Most staff are given help by if a colleague spots they are stressed. But there will always be abusers in every walk of life, not just care homes.
