"I must be one of the few women who has called their GP surgery because I think I'm overdue my smear test... My mum had abnormal cells many years ago, so am very aware of the necessity. I didn't realise that you don't get the tests until 25. Could have sworn you used to qualify as soon as you are legally sexually active. " I'm pretty sure they changed the age about 11 years ago, I thought it was 21, had my daughter at 22 and was told I was too young

Ridiculous that you need to be 25 for it ![]() I looked into this as I’ve had problems in the past and wanted my daughter to have one. They wouldn’t do it so I said can I pay for it anywhere then. They said there is a high risk of miscarriage in later life of they’re done before 25. We could have paid privately but she chose not to.

"Apparently the age is 25 because your cells in your cervix keep changing up until this age so you're much more likely to get abnormal cells when nothing is actually wrong. This can result in young women having cervical treatments that can affect their ability to carry a child to term and give birth naturally in the future. Obviously if this cervical treatment is neccessary to prevent cancer, then that's a risk worth taking but due to how many women under 25 would end up having these treatments unnecessarily (due to the number of false positives) that could have impacts on them having children in the future, they decided not to start them until 25. Cervical cancer screening may be changing to a swab for HPV (the virus that causes most cases of cervical cancer) though instead of looking at cervical cells under the microscope so this new year could be offered to younger women. Also there is talk of being able to take the swab yourself at home like you can with STI tests so that might help to increase uptake." *New test
