Body types: average, curvy, ample...

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

What's the difference? Obviously curvy people have curves, but everyone does to some extent. What makes you curvy rather than average, or ample rather than curvy in your opinion?

I know the words we choose on our profiles don't matter really, recent photos are a much better illustrator of body type, and it's all very subjective. I'm just interested as to why people choose particular labels.

My personal opinion

Athletic, self explanatory

Curvy, hour glass type figure, Kelly Brook typeish

Average, somewhere between the last two maybe.

Ample, larger than average

Fabulous, larger than ample.

Don't ask me where the line is between the last 2, I don't really care

I'd say curvy is size 12-16, generous size boobs and hour glass figure. Marilyn monroe had a beautiful curvy body.

I think size 18 and above is still curvy depending on shape and height, but edging onto ample. Ample is thick waist and thick thighs and wobbly bits.

That's just how I see it, obviously everyone's interpretation of the description won't be the same.

"Average" is pointless.

If you were born in 1957, the average British woman was 5ft 2ins tall, weighed 9st 10lbs, had size three feet and was a dress size 12. (There has also been dress size inflation in that time as well)

Today’s British women are 5ft 5ins tall on average, weigh 11st, have size six feet and dress size 16.

Most noticeable, however, is just how much bra sizes has increased - 60 years ago, women were wearing 34B bras on average, whereas today it’s 36DD.

It would seem much simpler just to have a height and weight drop-down box that people could use if they wish.

I choose curvy as I'm not slim but I have a small waist. I've had many feel the need to tell me I'm both too small and too big to call myself that though. I guess that's how I know I've picked the right one .

"So for me, I would define curvy as slim/average with bigger hips, bum and/or boobs.

I would describe myself as ample as I don’t particularly have an hour glass figure and I’m bigger than average. It’s hard to know exactly though because everyone views people differently and one persons average is a another’s large/slim. "

Nobody really knows what they are, you just have to go with what makes sense really. What makes sense for you won't really make sense for others.

They are nothing more than general labels at giving a quick descriptive idea of body shape.

The female body generally has more varied "shapes" individually than men do. We are very basic in that department.

I’m not really sure there’s even a need for body type on here, you can’t search by it and it’s really subjective anyway. Had to check what we are even down as!

Think we both used to describe ourselves as athletic but the ravages of time and injuries meant we changed to average and curvy a while ago. Doesn’t really mean anything other than neither of us feel in the shape we used to be so wouldn’t say we’re athletic. People will still decide based on what they see anyway, so just a pointless feature for us.

I do understand the need for body type information on profiles, I also understand that they are intended to be body positive. However, everyone has a different subjective opinion of what that description is (with the exception of athletic, I think that's fairly clear), that coupled with people being intentionally misleading about their body shape/using old pictures/fake pictures renders the descriptions next to useless.

To me:

Athletic - toned/muscly

Slim - skinny

Average - neither thin nor fat

Curvy - big hips, boobs and ass

Ample - more to love

Large - probably a lot of jiggling about when being fucked (me lol)

Fabulous - all of the above

I'd say it's very subjective and a lot comes down to how you've been treated in the past, your upbringing, having confidence or lack of instilled in you.

I mean, I'm an above average human in lots of areas, below average in others.

In looks I'd say I'm above average if I was slapped in the centre of redneck county 70 years ago but when I look in the mirror I see a normal, average person.

My preference is gym toned ladies with muscle. Although there’s nothing wrong with large framed ladies that don’t carry the hanging fat of some of the bbw types frames.

The great thing about it is there’s plenty of different types to go around for everyone and all types are perfect for someone

Beautiful curves. But I'm a little bias.

I’ve put curvy as my body type because I am curvy.

"I had a conversation about this yesterday... Some of you ladies have a very strange opinion of what you look like... I'd say 50% of the females on here put themselves in an above average category when they clearly are not. "

And who has decided that then? You? Thank you for expressing your opinion.

We’re all free to use whatever language we like when describing ourselves. Perception being what it is, pics are also very handy

"Don’t care about the difference tbh.

Good set of pictures that show the woman I want to meet accurately is enough for me"

I'm more than the sum of my lumps and bumps.

I discribe myself how I choose and many over my time on fab have felt the need to challenge me on that.

I couldn't care less what the actual definitions are, I chose how I discribe myself and no one else.

I think that's the point with regards to the definitions given, people can use them however they see fit. Personally, I think that there needs to be a degree of consensus of definition otherwise they mean nothing.

I'm not saying that people are wrong, my issue is mainly when an overweight person calls themselves athletic but that's because it's the only one with a quantifiable definition

I'm a size 16 & describe myself as ample. It fits my conception of myself better than any of the other terms.

I've a female friend who is 5'10, a size 18, she plays women's rugby and could probably crush a man's skull with her extremely muscular thighs... Technically she would be classed as overweight but she is undoubtedly athletic

I class myself as curvy because my hips and bum are bigger than my waist.

"My personal opinion

Athletic, self explanatory

"

Is that athletic in a Mo Farah way, an Anthony Joshua way or the chap that beat him sort of way?

All pretty open to interpretation, I think.

Then that's entirely up to them.

It may be seen as deluded by others but it is not the place of someone else to say that how a person choses to discribe themselves is wrong.

"What's the difference? Obviously curvy people have curves, but everyone does to some extent. What makes you curvy rather than average, or ample rather than curvy in your opinion?

I know the words we choose on our profiles don't matter really, recent photos are a much better illustrator of body type, and it's all very subjective. I'm just interested as to why people choose particular labels.

"

I’m 6ft tall and weight train, I’m a size 20. I could also crush lots of things with my thighs I have myself down as large because I think people expect Jessica Rabbit it you say curvy, and Jessica Ennis if you say athletic. I’m tall and broad so I think large fits best. Some would disagree, but unless Fab are going to define each category then all we can do is our best. I describe myself in my profile as best as I can, no interest in deceiving anyone.

Agree with everyone here that is pretty subjective and, more than anything, an individual's personal choice.

One thing I do find odd are male profiles describing themselves as 'curvy'. More power to them, but never entirely sure what they mean!

"I think everyone should just put fabulous down.

That's a great idea! The others are too confusing. Like I'm not slim, but I also don't have an hourglass figure- just a huge ass. :')

Yeah I thought I was bigger than average then I saw someone said what average actually was, so now I’m confused. I’ve got big boobs but no hips/waist definition so I wouldn’t describe myself as curvy. I honestly don’t know what I am! "
