Somewhere In The Ether…

Okey dokey - a simple question: Who are your personal favourite song writers?

What artist/s compose the most thought provoking/meaningful/resonant lyrics in your opinion?

(I somewhat doubt to see H P Baxxter of Scooter fame mentioned here.... )

Bob Dylan is in a class of his own. Paul Simon is a big hero, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen are very special. More recently Plan B writes incredible lyrics.

Bruce Springsteen by a huge margin for me.

Johnny Cash and Ray Charles were hit and miss but when they got it right we’re great. Mick and Keith are really under rated as lyricists too.

I like Roger Waters' lyrics. And I'm amazed I forgot to mention Ian Dury who was a lyrical genius. Neil Hannon also writes beautifully poetic and whimsical lyrics.

Neil Hannon also wrote the Father Ted theme tune so he’s alright in our books

He wrote all of the music for Father Ted including My Lovely Horse. BTW I totally agree with you about Mick and Keith and Springsteen is an incredible songwriter

Neil Tennent and Chris Lowe(Pet shop boys). The song ‘Being Boring’ written by them is such a beautiful song. George Michael choose it as one his dessert island disc songs.

There and to the left a bit

Paul Weller in his Jam days was an absolute lyrical genius whose lyrics were sheer poetry (That's Entertainment) or dark stories (Tube Station)

Lee Thompson of Madness is much underrated and a genius at writing lyrics with meaning hidden in what at first glance appears to be a cheery pop song (Embarassment and House Of Fun being two such examples)

Ian Dury as already mentioned is another much overlooked lyrical master

Paul Heaton (Housemartins/Beautiful South) is another

The Davies brothers of The Kinks were up there with Lennon/McCartney but without the acclaim

Some amazing people mentioned already but the best, other than those are:

Tony Asher who wrote the lyrics for the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album

And

Jimmy Webb - mostly performed by Glen Campbell eg. Wichita Lineman

And

Jacques Brel - mostly performed by Scott Walker eg. Jackie

And finally

Johnny Cash

For me Dylan is peerless as a lyricist, his work is varied and he’s modern day poet laureate. Not many in music have won a Nobel prize but Bob has.

I also like Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Diffard from Squeeze, they could really tell a story in a song.
