Be careful if using WHATSAPP!!! A couple of months ago I was due an upgrade so I past down my old handset to my son. I have kept my number and got him a new SIM card. I deleted the app and all contacts my son reinstalled WhatsApp to use and tonight he received a message from a friend on here that was meant for me! I always thought WhatsApp was set to a number not a device! Luckily the message wasn’t sexual but you can imagine my fear! Please be careful when handing down devices for the life of me I don’t know how this was possible but it was! Absolutely fuming!!!

We gave our old phone to our nephew. We did restore to factory settings. And very few have our personal details.

You have to factory reset as it saves from Google contacts

I have a friend who uses WhatsApp on her old number but on her new phone with a different work number in it. If you install WhatsApp using one sim you can change the sim and continue to use it til you tell it otherwise.....

Worried me when she told me!

You can change your SIM and number and still receive WhatsApp messages sent to your old number if you don’t set it up properly.

I did this when I bought a SIM just to use abroad for holiday. Still received all the messages sent to my original number. Which is what I wanted to do.

Definitely. I’ve only ever given them to my kids but I have always restored to factory settings thank goodness!

Nope. Hence why I won’t pass on my old phone to be fixed as it’s full of all kinds and can’t wipe it as needs fixing first to be able to access it. So it lays redundant.

If on iPhone your registered to both phones it will receive watapps you need to go into you devise and delete old handset.

That's odd, I got a new phone a few days ago, swapped the sim to the new phone and as soon as I signed back into WhatsApp, my old phone WhatsApp pinged up with a message saying I was now logged out of it on that device.

yes we did we thought it was only saved to the phone number as it says it’s end to end encrypted but that’s not the case

I upgraded my phone recently and the person in the shop told me that very little information is saved on the same card these days, because smart phones have an inbuilt hard drive all the information gets stored on there, so it won’t matter if you put in a different Sim card as soon as you’re loaded in the app and reload the information from the hard drive on the phone or from The cloud or iCloud

whatsapp is a bit tricky as it links a lot of your info to Google. Tbf the only way to try and avoid any embarrassing moments is to do a complete factory reset on any phone you pass on ..and possibly have one dedicated Gmail account that you can use on your ' burner ' phone going forward . All said and done though these days it's hard to know what peoples info is available . Good you avoided a very embarrassing situation though OP has got to be a relief .

WhatsApp uses Wifi or data to communicate it only uses a Sim card number to send a verifications code too for a new account.

I think its backed up on Google Drive not sure though.

As soon as it is installed on a phone it searches for any data it recognizes which is probably what happened.

A factory reset would prevent that from happening.

But also remove any memory card that may be installed.

Personally I would delete the account and start a new one.

WhatsApp is not that secure.
