"Are Jaffa cakes, cakes or biscuits?

Asking the hard questions over here "

Boring factual answer - they're cakes. The makers went to court to prove it as cakes don't carry VAT but biscuits do.

Their arguement was that cakes go hard when left out in the open. Biscuits go soft. They won their case and so jaffa cakes are cakes.

Now that ive turned the whole of Fab on with my VAT chat, I'm assuming the number of meets tonight will be abnormally high. You can all thank me later.

Just show him this - he will undoubtedly loose control and the two of you can really make a weekend of it. I take no responsibility for any friction burns though.

Why don’t cake carry VAT?"

Sadly, I know the answer to this as well....

Vat doesn't apply to "essential" items. Cakes aren't considered a luxury item, but a necessity, so zero vat. The same is true of plain biscuits. For some reason, chocolate covered biscuits were considered a luxury when vat was introduced, and it's never been changed.

I can only imagine the fervour my chat is causing throughout the nation. Please remember to be safe folks, I don't want a huge rise in October babies....
