So most know I had cancer last 18 months, luckily I’m in remission now, but lost-an old friend to it over Christmas, it certainly makes you consider your mortality and reflect on life in general.

So am sat here this morning thinking...

Your lay in bed, to the outside world your dying, inside you know you will be in a dream, so what happens? Does everything just stop?

Or does your dream continue as maybe the dream world is part of the soul, the real you..

I have no idea, but what’s your thoughts?

Going back to nothingness isnt so bad, living for eternity might get boring.

I am not a religious man so do not believe in the concept of the after life. I would like to believe that we go where we were most happy. Many people recall their happiest moments as they pass, perhaps it is the brains way of helping minimise the fear.

For me, I would be by a river where I spent much of my childhood, it would be summer and all those loved ones that I have lost would be there. That would be my eternity.

We are but carbon and water.

You die and like a plant , you nourish the ground. Unless you get cremated, in which case you will pollute the skies and rattle in a jar for eternity - unless someone kindly scatter you to ...... GUESS WHAT ..... nourish the plants.

Life is a cycle but we are as one. The dead are dead for ever but life goes on and they feed it.

It is something , that if thought about more often would lead people to be so different in all they do.

NOW is the time to live. TODAY is the day to smile. THIS MOMENT is the moment to connect with others , to not do things that make you sad and to seek joy in the simple beauty around you.

There is no trial run. This is as good as it gets.

As a child there was a story circulating,

I do not know categorically granny but unfortunately I have been with many people as they die, it was a daily part of my old life, part of the job. In many instances people would recall their life, sometimes this was prompted by the people around them, perhaps their way of letting go too, to recall memories of happier times.

Brain chemistry is not my forte, but it is amazing at releasing chemicals and inducing physical and emotional states which minimise pain, grief and fear.

I like to think we go to an airport departure lounge and meet up with all those we have loved and lost (including pets) and get to hug and catch up and then we board a “flight” on to our next celestial adventure, whatever that may be.

I (Luke) think that when I die, anything left of "me" will go back into to the world. From dust we came and to dust we shall return.

I am part of the great cycle of life. I have no reason to think that my consciousness will remain. I will become food for other life. Molecules in me now will become part of plants and creatures that come and go like us all. It will be that way while life still exists. Maybe one day my molecules will go out into space and form other stars and planets. In one sense I will exist forever. Amazing!

Bill Brysons book “The Body” makes for an interesting read. The section on the brain and it wonder would suggest that once it expires for whatever reason, that’s it you are gone and the rest becomes part of the circle of life.

As for heaven or hell then I think that’s for those who hold dear to a deity which if it floats your boat then crack on.

What if our current life is THE dream.

We wakes up (death) and find out that all that we have now (looks, profession, friends, wealth, health, families etc) are just characters in the dream.

Who are we when we wake up (after death)? Are we better or worse than our dream (current life)?

I really never gave afterlife etc a thought but funny how you do when you lose a loved one. I lost my father in July to lung cancer 7 week's after diagnosis. He was a staunch Christian, only request were not to be cremated (apparently you continue to burn for all eternity,his word's) and no postmortem. We succeeded on both counts. Today I will go and visit his grave hoping that his headstone has arrived and to place some flowers. And really hoping there's and afterlife because I can't bare to think at this moment,my beautiful brave dad's life came to nothing.

Keep fighting the fight Stella, someone has to beat the fucker x

I was in a similar situation 8 years ago - you do think very seriously about your own mortality. I didn’t really think about what would happen to me but I did think about everyone I would leave behind. The hardest part for me was writing goodbye letters and trying to give some sort of comfort to those I love.

I like to think that, as someone said, the conscious part of you goes on to somewhere else but the physical body is left behind.

It is, as are many of the scientific articles which debunk his claims with facts.

I thought the book presented good proofs for hallucination more than anything else.

I believe in reincarnation because it's a wonderful thought. Have you ever looked at an animal and wondered what life would be like from its perspective? I dont believe it's by choice, but random. Like a spirit unknowingly drifting from one life to another. As one door closes another one opens, as we die our spirits leave our body and enter something new

I think it just stops with death, watching my dad take his last breath was heartbreaking and very final. Despite not being religious I still kinda had a hope for some kind of spiritual thing when the end came, but nothing.

I know you live on in the hearts and minds of those close to you that you leave behind. I have no idea what happens when you pass on but what you do in life influences those you leave behind.

I like to believe the spirit enters as it is being born. When its eyes first open is when you begin to see the real world again, whatever you may be.

I lost 2 close family members as a teenager, one was only 45, so have always been well aware of my mortality.

One of the reasons I try to make the most of what life offers and to be as nice and kind to others as possible.

So am sat here this morning thinking...

Your lay in bed, to the outside world your dying, inside you know you will be in a dream, so what happens? Does everything just stop?

Or does your dream continue as maybe the dream world is part of the soul, the real you..

I have no idea, but what’s your thoughts?.

every element in your body was created in stars, scattered by super Nova and hauled together via gravity where chemistry worked it's wonder to create "you".

No element is lost, no energy dissipated but by all accounts "you" will be gone forever never to be seen again.

The thought of being meaningless has tormented mankind since our evolution.

But as part of humanity we are merely tear drops on the face of eternity?.

If a tree falls in an empty forest does it make a noise?.

I don't know and I leave Philosophy for those that wish to dream, I'm very much living in reality.

Sorry to hear that OP.

Just recently two twin brothers were found hanging in the woods where they used to play when they were children.

One of them found out he had cancer and they both ended their lives. So sad they were only 32.

I’ve had some real strange experiences at the point of death working with people in hospice and palliative/end of life care.

If I weigh up all these things I will deffo say there’s enough evidence for me to believe in something after death.

One day I will find out but for now I’m saying 110% YES

Hubby was diagnosed last year and has struggled with chemo screwing his blood work up. He's an atheist, so to him it's very simple. You die. It's exactly the same as before you were born. You won't know anything about it. " you're born, you die, the bit in the middle is called life"

Humans have likely wanted there to be something after our death for as long as we've had consciousness, especially as for much of our existence we've lived through harsh times, with limited control over our destiny. Those desires helped others to take more control over us and society, with religious beliefs that promised much in the afterlife, particularly if we behaved and made their leadership easier for them.

We seem to be just another form of matter, in a universe, which will itself come to an end at some point, similarly to the billions of others out there. Each collection of matter that is formed into an animal, that will ultimately be recycled, whilst the universes await their outcome, doesn't seem to suggest that those assembled bits of matter have anything but a finite time and place when they will be a person, with that meaningful consciousness intact. Afterwards, it's likely that it's just an infinitesimally microscopic aspect of matter's existence.

I'd like there to be a an existence that's continued after death but I think it's unlikely and a desire sparked by our culture.

When I was nursing I also came across some Fairly regular happenings as patients were dying

Seeing people they’ve lost by their bed coming to se them etc

They were happy !

Not all on medication or confused either

I’m not religious at all and in truth NO ONE can tell you definitely if there is anything else and some people seem like they have this deep need to absolutely tell you there isn’t like the thought of someone considering anything else will end the world but I do think there are many possibilities that we can’t possibly know about and science hasn’t and can’t Prove or disprove absolutely everything that we don’t understand the same way as people stating there’s nothing else in the entire universe besides us

We do all have different energy / souls / consciousness that make us unique and maybe that is released from our physical body at death ,

Who knows ?

There are all manner of unexplained events / experiences happening all the time and that I find interesting and possibly a comfort too

I’ve had a stranger come to me to tell me something accurate and comforting about someone young In our family that we have lost at a time when I was in deep grief and they didn’t know me or my name so that was strange

Also an old man I knew who was literally the most stoical down to earth old Yorkshire man told me how shocked he was to wake up months after the death of his wife to see her sat on his bed .

He said it was very clear and real and she smiled and was gone again .

He said he just knew he had to believe it as it wasn’t dream like and he wasn’t in a moment of sadness etc , more just like an observation followed by interest .

If we do die entirely then as someone with a warm heart here mentioned earlier , you will never die in the hearts and minds of those who love you .

My loved ones are in my heart and mind every day as my most precious memories and I hold them close as part of who I am and my until I too leave this earth with them .

And nothing can change how real or loved they were / are to me x

Obviously, we have no idea what happens to our soul, what makes us the person we are, after death.

However, Alzheimers can rob you of that before you die - and float off to another dimension; which would be very ironic for those who believe 'they' will do such a thing.

You have no concept of being conscious until you have memories; you're robbed of your earliest ones by infant amnesia - and we still don't understand why.

Nobody seems to care about where their soul was before they were born; certainly, they have no memory of it.

As far as the body goes, your atoms were there before you were born and they'll be recycled after you die.

That means we really are all equal and that none of us go to waste.

I am not sure what happens, but whatever it is I hope it is beautiful.

I went to see my Mum a long term COPD sufferer and as we sat having a cup of tea she said to me "Shelley, I don't think I will be here next week, I had a visit from your Dad he told me it won't be long, he is getting things ready for me for Monday"

I literally laughed at her... told her it was daft, Dad died 22 years ago.

That Friday she got taken ill and rushed into Hospital, slipped into a coma and they turned her life support off on the Monday.

Not wanting negative comments thanks, I know what some peoples opinions are on these matters, just relaying my experience... and a conversation had with someone dying.

I don't think it really matters what anyone else says it's what you believe in, if your last moments on earth are in a place of serenity and happiness at the thought of being either.

In eternal happiness.

Reborn.

Food for the circle of life supplying nutrition for other life thus never truly dying.

Whatever you believe that's what's important.

And if there is nothing and you have no knowledge of nothing just eternal nothing then it's not going to matter as you won't be aware.

We are just atom's everything is essentially the same once our thoughts have gone we become one with the universe or atoms continue to exist in one way or another.

Dust,sand, trees,mud,water, planets, star's everything is made from cosmic dust it's where we came from its where we are going, until once again there's truly nothing in the universe and it's just a black empty void all of us, everything that's ever been or going to be will still be here in one way or another no matter how tiny and small those pieces are.

I actually died 10 years ago having a run of the mill operation I had a bad reaction to the sedation I was out for a whole 2 minutes haha

I do recall some strange crazy things but can't put my finger on it a bit like knowing but not knowing it's odd and still haunts me every now and then with a gaunt empty feeling

I'd like to think that something happens but will obviously never know until it's our time

Live every day to it's fill appreciate what you have and who you have around you I try to do at least one good deed a day just incase something or someone is watching

i have never dreamt except if you include day dreaming but you get one life IMHO their is no afterlife enjoy the one you have the best you can

I lost my partner last year at age 48.

I have no idea if there is a "better place" or an afterlife.

The only thing his death taught me is that life is short, tomorrow is not a certainty and to live each day to the full.

Enjoy it and make the most of it while you can as you don't how long you have.

No, Not everyone.. My father never believed in there being something else & when he knew his time was short gave strict instructions. Basic as basic can be coffin, no dressing him up leave him in what he was wearing & cremation.

“I don’t care, I won’t be there”

Can’t be many go wearing boxers & a vest top..

One of the things we often spoke about was religion & how fucked up it was & his thoughts were you didn’t have to believe, you didn’t have to be religious, you just needed to know right from wrong & always err to what you thought was the right. Then if there is a hereafter you’d get in anyway as you’d been a good person. Probably more chance than the average Catholic priest I’d say....

Do we have a soul??? I don’t think so, it’s just another way we try & separate ourselves out from all the other life & to Male is feel “Special”. imo it’s arrogant. If we have souls we must allow for the fact any animal can have a soul. Remember that when eating your T-Bone steak or lamb chop.

You never go anywhere though, the atoms in you could have been atoms in a snowdrop previously. An animal, a tree..anything & everything you are still here somewhere, everywhere..

As an aside to that, I really want it to be different, I really want it to be happy and I find my dog waiting for me even the thought of him waiting and wagging his tail is making me cry, damn I miss him and wish when I die he is waiting for me

Blacked out whilst running one minute there next, being brought back by a couple of paramedics in an ambulance, technically dead for ??? Have no idea how long but it was just nothing no dreams or lights, no heavenly voices just nothing!!!

No one can be certain of anything when it comes to "death". As far as consciousness goes there are quite a few scientists nowadays who believe that the brain doesn't actually create consciousness but actually acts as a transmitter and receiver for consciousness.

I for one believe that phyical death is not the end of the story but that is my belief and i know plenty who don't share that belief

Why would it terrify you? "You" are not there to experience anything. I find it quite comforting.

The “nothing” part doesn’t terrify me, it’s the fear of knowing I’m about to die and knowing there will be nothing after, the anticipation of it, if you will.
