I'm a woman the last time I looked, took me a long time to become a woman. " Have you asked the guys ... only they can give you a definitive reason. Everyone else is guessing My guess it's because you're so young looking. I may be wrong though.

"Who knows? Women are addressed in many unpleasant ways here, I suppose it's just another. Useful filtering tool though." It is. The guy of a couple from another site sent us a lengthy fantasy scenario in which he referred to me and his partner throughout as "the girls" and him and Mr N as "the men" or by their names. That spoke volumes to me but I overlooked it. Turns out my instincts were correct, us women were fantasy objects to him just a unit labelled in his mind as "the girls" while he and Mr N were individuals.

"Some may be though less, some condescending, some downright insulting. On the other hand if a woman is going out with her friends it's often referred to by themselves as a 'girly night' or being 'out with the girls'. I once used the term 'ladies' on here in a very respectful way and immediately got jumped on by one particular woman who also PM'd me with a vile tongue-lashing stating how offensive the word ladies was. I try to be very respectful to women, both on here and in the real world, but I have to admit to having been taken aback by that one. " Should have read "....thoughtless.....". Doh!

I don't like hearing a man refer to "the wife" or "'er indoors" because I'd hate it for myself but if the woman in question is happy with it it's no problem to me. I'm a woman the last time I looked, took me a long time to become a woman. Are you hard work? Do you often end up in arguments on Facebook I actually never hardly do anything on Facebook apart from keeping an eye on my huge family. I'm not hard work unless people (usually men) make me hard work Sorry obviously got you wrong....sounded like you could be hard work...especially about a turn of phrase... most likely from someone you will never meet or even speak to But women do meet and speak to men who call them girls. Yes ... I'm guessing a lot won't care about being called girl....and if you are face to face you can just say "don't call me girl" or what ever bothers you... But then they accuse us of being hard work. Well you could just keep quiet and let everyone have a nice evening....and then moan like fu@k about it in the car on the way home... " Yeah No one likes a woman who speaks up for herself

" Tone, and context in which it was said would play a much larger role than the word used for me. I'd not be offended either way, however if it was said in a way hinting as an insult or put down I'd not take kindly to it. I try to not put too much power in to a word on its own, and instead focus on what surrounds the word. It's a fragile world when finding the correct words to use and while some things need careful wording, others it would be impossible to navigate regardless of the word used. Somebody would dislike a certain word, while others dislike the alternatives.

"We seem to live in a society where offence is caused by anything and everything and ...IMHO....we could all do with a reality check..... This is not ment to undermine the OP's point of view or feelings... but is being called girl....really that bad...or offensive....." Certainly depends on the situation and context. If its in an argument or debate or whatever, in a fairly professional setting and somebody says "don't be a silly boy/girl" then yes it is quite offensive. It is what is being channelled through those words that is the issue. I do agree with you though, about simple things causing offence and the need to get worked up about things instead of just internally dealing with it and moving on. Note I said simple things, some things should be brought to attention and fought against - Blatant sexism and bullying etc

From what I’m getting the OP was referring to on here not in a work place so the context and environment play a big part in how certain things are said. Now if it’s in a workplace you have probably have HR and policies in place for dealing with it, if it’s on here you have the ability to block someone and move without having to go on to a forum and complain

A first message that appears too familiar using too many terms like that is risky. You have no idea what the other person would feel about it. Though if its too formal then it drains personality out of it. If familiar terms are then used later on in follow up messages, I would then assume it is just a term they use in general with whoever they are chatting/flirting to. Very likely a region or local thing. If it was one I didn't particularly enjoy, I'd make it clear that I'm not offended but don't take to it. If it continues then I'd just end things.

It's not one I spend any energy on. It's still inappropriate and condescending and I wish it would stop. Just because there's (insert global catastrophe here) doesn't mean we can't consider the tiny ways we can treat each other better. And it's such a tiny tweak to not refer to grown, mature adults as children. Why wouldn't you?
