Would loved to have seen Bob Marley live but never got round to it. Not a huge fan of Reggae but he was a cut above. I often wonder how the music industry would be now had he lived longer.

terribel is the answer.

i trully believe that iconic singers that 'die early' would have ruined thier careers by going on much too long.

the likes of hendrix/bolon/cobain/mercury we iconic and fantastic and, rarely, released a song that wasnt taken well, and are still celebrated today.

but look at sting/bowie/costello et al, releasing music that hasnt moved on and has no appeal, imho.

so they were better off bowing out when they did.

I was thinking more along the lines of how he would have affected black music from behind the scenes as well as a singer. I'm not sure rap would have taken such a strong foothold had Marley still been around to present his peaceful interpetation of black music. Today's black music seems to be very angry and oppressive, and one does wonder if Marley could have been instrumental in preventing that. A lot of the black people I knew 30 years ago identified with Marley regardless of whether they liked reggae or not.

sorry, apologies.

i think its more about the style of music.

reggae is, and always has been about expression and love (in fact, again, imo, most of Marleys best work was his love songs. most awesome)

hip hop/rap has always been about anger, however, and as that is more mainstream nowadays than reggae, then thats what we always hear more of.

i know which i would rather partake of, and it aint all this gangsta shizzle lol

No need for apologies, we were looking at it from different angles. There is a lot of truth in what you said about older singers who's star has faded somewhat, but a lot of them are still involved behind the scenes as producers etc.

I got into Bob Marley in my teens. I was only 7 when he died so never got to see him but I did get to see Ziggy Marley at the Montreux Jazz festival in Switzerland while I was working there as an aupair...what an awesome experience.My 3 are also fans although they do not know it...3 little birds is in the sharktale movie and they walk around singing it all the time...lol

On a reggae theme ... Watching reggae Britannia last night i heard max Romeos lie down girl (lie down girl let me push it up push it up) ... reminded me of the sprint my mum put on to stop me and my friends blasting out my dads copy of the song in the street ... circa 1980 maybe? They dont write lyrics like this anymore ...
