I've stopped going as the British ones are just designed to fleece money from the punters.

I used to go to the Wales Comic Com in the early days, and it was relaxed and you could chat to the guests as they wandered around (spent half an hour talking to Jason Momoa about surfing 5 years ago). But now it's all about the expensove photos.

I'm friends with the artist who drew Ren and Stimpy and I put him in touch with the organisers and they were charging a fortune for a table

I've been to "For the love of sci fi" the last couple of years, they are good but some of the fees for an autograph or photo with some of the celebrity guests are crazy, as well as spending most of the day in queues for your brief meeting with them. Still a good day out though.

We were regulars at MCM London but with hotels, cosplay, tickets and food the £2500 (approx) cost is a tad steep now.

We still do the odd smaller con though.

What makes up most of the £2500 cost? I can see a lot of cosplayers spending hundreds, if not thousands on some costumes.

Most of it was the costumes. Three days, often three different outfits for the both of us (though sometimes we took ones that we had done before).

At the last one our Aquaman and Mera outfits (injustice/comic mashups) took 6 months to make and a fair chunk of that cost in materials. Plus transporting it up to the venue, inflated hotel costs, £120 in tickets, plus Friday tickets for our kids. It all adds up.

I've done London once and Manchester a fair few times over the years. I would love to go to some more, don't live too far from Manchester which helps.

The problem is that you get people rocking up with holdalls and suitcases rammed with stuff that they want signing by certain celebrities which they then immediately sell online or at other events for profit, and having witnessed it a few times they're usually awful people who treat the celebrities as performing monkeys rather than being genuine fans who are just happy to meet them.

When I met Carl Weathers last year you could tell by his face he was getting a bit annoyed with people turning up with huge bags full of boxing gloves and shorts for him to sign which they were obviously going to sell on. He seemed happy to meet me though, we had a chat and a handshake and he signed a photo for me.
