You're feeling under the weather. You wake up to find some evil bastard has poured cement in your nostrils, your head feels like the seven dwarves are having a fine old time with their pick axes inside it, your throat like you've been gargling razor wire. You have a temperature you think would fry an egg on your forehead and your body feels like you've been trampled by a herd of stampeding wildebeest.

Yes, you have a cold. But what kind of patient are you?

Are you the type that gracefully bears your discomfort in stoic silence or do you think that if you're going down you're taking everyone else with you, hell bent on making their lives a misery?

I’d ring 111.

That's a call to work to tell them to get on with things.

I cannot afford to lose staff for a few days by infecting them myself, and I certainly don't want to impact on the large numbers of individuals that we deal with each day as this would have a profound impact on process outcomes.

Similarly, the individuals that we see are specifically informed not to attend if they are unwell (or carrying an injury) as they will not be going anywhere other than back home again.

Fluids, tissues, decongestants, repeat. I've got cold n flu tablets on standby but no temperature so I'm sticking with the first 3.

Although lip balm, on my lips and nose too

I ignore it and crack on with whatever I should be doing. Distraction works much better than self pity fir making me feel better.

I'd rest, being willing to invest several days for my recovery. Going slowly and having some peace and rest is something to savour, so I'm not a bad patient.

Depends how functional you are, but I'll either just carry on dosing up on paracetamol & antihistamine ...

orrrr stay home:

Plenty water/juice.

An OTC nasal decongestant.

Couple Shots of brandy throughout the day.

Plenty of sleep.

Get well soon!

There's currently an advert on the television from Beechams titled 'Boss it with Beechams'.

A £3.9 million campaign suggesting that people can 'defy their colds' and keep going with the aid of an over-priced combination of three very inexpensive ingredients (paracetamol*, phenylephrine** & guaifenesin***).

Part of the advert shows dad soldiering on in a kids play area. This is an outstanding frickin' idea as, once children get an infection, they tend to become super-infectors passing on the infection to family and other children.

To put things into perspective; norovirus can be transmitted, and will be infective, with a minimum of 18 norovirus particles; it's highly infective and easily transmitted.

Then consider the implications of 'soldiering on' with an influenza virus that is both easily transmitted and highly infected; that's the stuff of epidemics and pandemics.

I take two paracetamol regularly, I drink a hot Manuka honey and lemon, if I have a sore throat I will have natural yogurt with live cultures. Other than that I will crack on with it

Depends on what's wrong. Serious illness I'd rather be left to my own devices, can't be done with sympathy and fussing.

I very rarely get a cold, but whenever I do I whine about it non-stop and I expect a lot of sympathy from everyone. I get totally melodramatic and take to my sofa coughing pathetically like Greta Garbo in Camille.

I'm not good at getting poorly as I always have too much to do. But I can handle a cold.

However beast...well he is a bit of a nightmare and turns into sickly child mode when he's feeling ill. The last time I had to put up with him like that I was happy to ship him back home .

I have had the worse Christmas ever. I been sick from Christmas morning and still feeling crap.

If I wasn't sitting on toilet I was putting my head in a bucket. I spent nearly all Christmas in bed. Christmas dinner was around 20.00 and that ended up in the bucket.

Boxing Day I was supposed to go to the football. But I couldn't even leave the bathroom.

My brother and his other half was sick as well.
