I see it a lot about people but have no real clue it seems to be a bad thing

I always thought it was a knock out artist cos lex luger always knocked people out with his metal elbow and it was his nickname

One who manages to take any scenario, and manipulate it so all attention is on them.

Take advantage of others to get what they want. Lack empathy.

Expect praise, attention, special treatment.

Usually have a few ‘enablers’ who pander to them, and further inflate this sense of being special.

Someone who is not narcissistic, may feel ‘emptiness’ in times with a narcissist, when with others they felt fulfilled...

All of the above. I'll add that they have delusions of grandeur and consider themselves superior and special. They have a strong sense of entitlement and will walk all over others to make themselves look good. They especially enjoy doing this in social situations, where they can play to an audience and put their partner / spouse down to look better.

I kinda know a thing or two on this topic - was married to one for 15 years...

I had the misfortune to meet someone like this from fab a couple of years ago. It was a horrid experience and he is back on the site. It made me very wary of men displaying certain characteristics.

I told him very clearly what I thought of his behaviour when he approached me again and he suggested that as I was capable of self reflection I’d no doubt realise why it was my fault.

Nuff said really.

And they're always the victim.

They prey on peoples vulnerability, especially those with a caring nature.

They have such a twisted reality that they tru to warp yours too.

If you're lucky you'll walk away with just your mind, self esteem, confidence and sense of self destroyed. If you're ballsy enough to stand up to one after they've tried ripping you apart mentally, they may opt for the physical violence too.

I talk from experience.

My ex tried to get me to kill myself, apparently I was so worthless and shit at everything I'd not even manage to do that right and he begged me to prove him wrong, so at least I managed SOMETHING worthwhile in my pathetic existence. That's a fucking narcissist.

There are narcissistic traits that we may be all have some point.

Narcissistic personality disorder, I think, is a more deep rooted set of behavioural patterns put in place because of wounding/rejection/humiliation/devalue.

I'm not a fan of throwing the label around.. nor the idea that narcissists are pure evil. Although in relationship, the behaviour can ultimately be manipulative and impose self doubt on the other.

I'm no psychologist so this is just my understanding.

I'm not perfect, far from it. I've made mistakes and will continue to do so, but hurting people I'm supposed to care about couldn't be further from my mind, in fact I'm the kind of person that will suffer to keep someone I love "happy" at times.

I've had the misfortune to have worked with quite a few individuals that meet the criteria for NPD; they are extremely dangerous sociopaths.

The DSM-5 Criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorders are:

A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by FIVE OR MORE of the following:

1 Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements).

2 Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love.

3 Believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions).

4 Requires excessive admiration.

5 Has a sense of entitlement (i.e. unreasonable expectation of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations).

6 Is inter-personally exploitative (i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends).

7 Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others.

8 Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her.

9 Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors and attitudes.

Have an exaggerated sense of self-importance

Have a sense of entitlement and require constant, excessive admiration

Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it

Exaggerate achievements and talents

Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate

Believe they are superior and can only associate with equally special people

Monopolize conversations and belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior

Expect special favors and unquestioning compliance with their expectations

Take advantage of others to get what they want

Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others

Be envious of others and believe others envy them

Behave in an arrogant or haughty manner, coming across as conceited, boastful and pretentious

Insist on having the best of everything — for instance, the best car or office

A sociapath can be mistaken for a narcissist quite easily.

Either way I absolutely hate both and they are one of the worst things to endure and suffer.

Not easy to diagnose these things in my opinion and wouldn't listen to one person's opinion. Half of these so called experts are as batty as their patients in my opinion..

They have a strong sense of entitlement and will walk all over others to make themselves look good. They especially enjoy doing this in social situations, where they can play to an audience and put their partner / spouse down to look better.

DSM-5 is a consensus of diagnostic criteria developed by the American Psychiatric Association i.e. rather more than just one psychiatrist.

It's reviewed and amended on a regular basis.

The UK (World Health Organisation) version is ICD-11 and every contact you have with your general practitioner or hospital specialist is coded in your medical record using this.

Again, ICD-11 is regularly reviewed and amended.

Very true. My ex considers it my fault that he cheated on me for three months as he says I didn't give him enough attention or make him feel attractive so he turned to tinder to make him feel more attractive and then ended up meeting someone on there. When she figured out that I was his girlfriend she told me. As a result he blames her for our relationship ending, not his cheating. He's always the victim and everyone else around him isn't good enough and that's used to excuse anything he does to hurt people.

There is only so much you can give isnt there, when all the other can ever do is take. You run out of yourself eventually and when its noticed there is nothing left of you, you get discarded, slightly worse for wear.

I had the misfortune to meet someone like this from fab a couple of years ago. It was a horrid experience and he is back on the site. It made me very wary of men displaying certain characteristics.

I told him very clearly what I thought of his behaviour when he approached me again and he suggested that as I was capable of self reflection I’d no doubt realise why it was my fault.

They prey on peoples vulnerability, especially those with a caring nature.

They have such a twisted reality that they tru to warp yours too.

If you're lucky you'll walk away with just your mind, self esteem, confidence and sense of self destroyed. If you're ballsy enough to stand up to one after they've tried ripping you apart mentally, they may opt for the physical violence too.

I talk from experience.

My ex tried to get me to kill myself, apparently I was so worthless and shit at everything I'd not even manage to do that right and he begged me to prove him wrong, so at least I managed SOMETHING worthwhile in my pathetic existence. That's a fucking narcissist.

We'll mostly be on several continua of personality traits, that others have covered, that will see narcissists with clusters of some of them to a full level - whilst the rest of us will have possibly some of these characteristics to a lesser extent and not all of them at the max. You may be learning about them out of interest but they will have no interest in you, apart from how they can gain from you.

It is an over used word for ex partners. I researched the definition a tonne of times, and I was very attracted to his charm, and good looks. He was very addictive. But he had compromised me with my friends and network, as they didn’t like him and his arrogance. I don’t like arrogance either, a turn off. I like confidence in the bedroom but not arrogance.

I am less confident and probably do use fab as a self validation method ! But most of all I use it as I enjoy the lifestyle it offers , an escape from everyday responsibilities.

I haven't read the rest of the thread but I used to know someone who used the term for her ex and was very bitter about him and everything he did or said.

The problem I had with her definition was that she joined dozens of narcissism chatgroups and forums, most of which were based in the US so she spent most nights telling her story to anyone who would listen until 2 or 3 am.

She was obsessed with social media in general but especially anything posted by those who had "done her wrong" including the ex.

Every time he put a new pic on FB she took a screenshot and added a note in the files she was keeping on him or sometimes she couldn't resist commenting directly on FB.

I don't remember too many conversations that didn't refer to him at some point or how she saw narcissistic traits in former friends who had grown weary of her antics.

She lived for compliments and often asked for them if they weren't immediately given.

Throughout all of this her ex never once reacted or responded to what she was doing.

I had never met him but she painted a picture of a horrible obsessive man. I could see no evidence of this but the irony was not lost on me and when I followed the example of some of her other friends and simply stopped engaging with her she started to stalk me on social media and comment on my FB or Instagram posts.

My experience of people who like to continuously talk about narcism and other buzzwords is that they really need to take a look in the mirror.

It's a very much misused term. Your last line, though very true, makes me sad. The narcissist after all , isn't always involved in the deliberate destruction of others , whether they are born or made they are operating in their own reality. They don't set out to be a narcissist, they didn't construct themselves and to them what they do is right.

Here I take little notice of the definitions people use because it's clear they think that a picture of a narcissist can be painted and that people conform exactly to that stereotype.

Here's another overused word spectrum.

There are narcissistic tendencies, and then NPD. We all know someone/many with narcissistic tendencies and it happens to all of us at some point. NPD (disorder), is different and a trait generally found in high-functioning roles such as surgeons and criminal law; people who have a real God complex. They are less dangerous than sociopaths because they don't totally disregard others, but there is a lot of overlap

I stopped engaging with him, and well I dis-armed him in a group chat, with others, as in exposed and confronted him, he didn’t like that. But I don’t need to say any more to people about him specifically, all I know is if people are in a controlling relationship, best to stand your ground, and listen to your gut feeling. If you think something isn’t right about someone, listen to your gut feeling , don’t do what I did and ignore that part because you like how they make you feel.

Aside from that I did have a fantastic time with him, the good times.

I’m very happy and independent in life and now very happy and independent in my fab lifestyle.

Oh people throw that word around so much you'd think everyone is a narcissist.

I am not a psychiatrist and if I was I would be only diagnosing my patients. It's a MH condition - a personality disorder. So using the term as an insult, or act of discrimination on the basis of a perceived difference is a form prejudice.

But it's ok because it's a MH condition so it's not a real disability "it's all in the mind". We can just use the term freely to insult people.
