Not sure if it has to be earnt, but the more you know someone, the more you know if you can either trust them or you can't! Even so, there's some people I've known for 2 years and i trust them more than others I've known for 20 years!

I believe that first and foremost we should trust ourselves. If we can't trust in our own person hpw can we extend that trust to other people.

I'm a trusting soul at heart that often needs to temper that tendency with real world pragmatism.

Agree with this.

With me though, I kind of get a sense, some people I will trust pretty quickly, others will never gain it.

Thing with me tho and a lot of people, once my trust has been broken I'm not sure it can ever be rebuilt. Even if I may want to trust that person again, something inside me won't allow it. I'll just start to distance myself and float off into the ether

I trust people are what they say they are initially and let them within a certain distance straight away. However, very few get past the inner walls and become truly close. Experience has taught me that people will show their colours in time. There’s no second chances here. Once I’m done I can close the chapter and move on without looking back.

On little inconsequential things.. Pretty easily. On bigger things... Not so much

I also find the older I get, the more my levels of trust seem to get eroded or are less easily given. The past few years I've really had my trust in some friends badly shaken and in some cases completely lost, and while you try not to paint everyone with the same brush or feel distrust around others, you can't help but let it affect other relationships.

The best comparison I can make is, if you've ever been hit or punched, it doesn't matter who did the hitting or punching... Any raised hand will make you flinch after that, even one raised in greeting.

I don't trust instantly but I feel I can get a gauge on people fairly quickly though it isn't so easy if someone is quite a closed book. I've been burnt in the past though but it's just a miserable way to live being suspicious of everyone due to the actions of a minority. I won't give endless chances though and a breach of trust is hard to come back from.

Think it's very sad when people have lost their faith in others through being hurt ... not trusting only holds ourselves back, doesn't affect others

Trust comes in varying degrees, so I trust everyone at level one and through knowing them it's increased so threfore earned or, a better way would be to say it's improved upon

I never trust unless I have met someone in person though as percieved trust isn't a positive thing in my eyes, a lot relies on communication and good communication is over 80% body language

I concur with this in many ways although I find I can develop significant amounts of trust with some people without meeting them. However what they have in common is an open, authentic, empathetic and compassionate way of communicating with significant ability to articulate feelings and thoughts. They paint the pictures of their body language in the way they write their messages. I would be seriously shocked to find they were untrustworthy.

I have met people who have broken all trust but choose not to judge all people by the actions of a few bad eggs. I still prefer to see/believe in the good and over time have been shown that if I don't trust all people it doesn't stop the bad eggs from being bad eggs but it does stop meeting and trusting lovely great people and having the most amazing off-the-cuff experiences

Not giving everyone the benefit of doubt only hurts me in the long run ... all relationships take time but have to start somewhere and found it to be the same with trust, has to start somewhere and takes time!

So so so so so much this!!

You know they ain't the same person that did it (or sometimes they are) but you know and have learned the possible and very real outcomes from those behaviours, even though we are certain it won't be the outcome in every individual case, we still flinch until we've learned it's safe not to around individual people
