Was really excited for this to come out on Netflix after seeing the trailer as I quite like fantasy/sci-fi shows (and not just for Henry Cavill... promise

)

Now I like to consider myself quite a smart cookie, especially where paying attention to detail is involved. I can name every minor character and subplot in all eight seasons of Game of Thrones and yet not twenty minutes into The Witcher I was more confused than a Very Confused Thing going through puberty

Way too many offscreen characters and made-up names and terms to learn/remember. I feel like this is something that might need a bit of time investing in ie reading the books before trying the show again.

Has anybody been watching? Does it get better/less confusing?

I've played all the games (Witcher 3 is a masterpiece) which did help me understand a lot of the lore in the series, as well as knowing who they were when certain names were mentioned, but you don't need to have played them to get it. The main thing that confused me in the series was that there were two different timelines going on and it took me a bit to figure that out. Other than that, loved it!

There is actually three different timelines. Geralt's, Ceri's and Yenneffer's.

Easy enough to follow if you pay attention. Little hints are dropped in each episode about where it features in the timeline.

I've read all the books and played witcher 3 obsessively but even I struggled with the constant time hops.

The characters not so much but some of the characters have been badly cast, and the writers have made them more pathetic than they already were (triss merrigold)

I’m loving it

After reading the books and playing the games I understand it more than most friends who watched it.

For a new person to it I’d say I preferred watch 2-3 episodes or more back to back cos you see the plots and subplots link and clues show up and click.

My friend tried and she fell asleep and episode 2 asked a million questions lol

I have been enjoying it Henry plays it perfect

I had opposite to got I didn’t like or connect to it after 2 episodes I gave up much to lots of people shock as a geek and nerd lol but I think I like dark side more or so my friend says lol

It's not so much the amount of lore that is putting me off - I prefer a fantasy world which is properly fleshed out. It's the fact that it's thrown about so haphazardly with no real attempt at explaining it. It's as if the show was created only for die-hard fans who already know the entire backstory.

I would imagine they will flesh out more of Geralts back story in future series, it hints at how Witchers are created from mutations carried out at Kaer Morhen when they are children in the series but I'm expecting some flashback sequences will show more of that further down the line.

Well made. Great casting. A few questionable adaption choices. The time line and time jump thing was a bit annoying but can see why they went with it I guess.

HC knocks it out of the park as Geralt.

I'm glad they didn't try to change it too much to appease the masses.

When that happens things go to shit. Stick to the core target audience and source material as best as you can. If "outsiders" like it, great. So many franchises and series try too hard to appeal to everyone and suffer for it, because they alienate those that already are fans with too many changes to what is core to it.

Yeah, it's now been said season 2 will be much more of a main story quest, and won't be hit by as many side quests.

I enjoyed it much more once I worked out that there were time jumps, they could have made that a little bit more easier to understand unless that was the point. If that was the case then it was totally of putting. Was frustrated by the fact that literally as I got what was going on and everything was finally coming together pop end of the series. Not a climax not a cliffhanger, frustration.

Yes it took me a few episodes to realise that there were different timelines and sometimes HC’s expressions were too exaggerated, but the fight scenes were amazing. There’s something very hot about a sword fight!

It's good, the biggest problem is that it jumps around on the timeline and doesnt make it clear at all that that is happening so this should make it easier:

Think of geralts time as the present

Yennefer story is decades in the past until her and geralt meet

Ciris story is maybe a decade ahead of geralts present

There’s little hints that there’s lots of flash backs scattered throughout the episodes. Like with the sorceresses being sworn in - you see a queen bollocking a little boy teasing his sister, and the queen calls him Foltest. In the rest of the episode Foltest is a grown man and king.

But I agree with others on here - it’s aimed at die hard fans of the books

To all the confused people...

The timeline jumps around all over the place. Apart from Yennefer's ascension, all the action appears to be within the point where the warrior queen accepts the 'law of surprise' claim by the porcupine faced knight to marry her daughter..who, as Geralt jokes of taking his payment as the same law, suddenly realises the daughter is pregnant, tying HIS destiny to the unborn granddaughter, who is Princess Cyrilla. He has some monster killings,falls for Yennefer, returns to the city to appease the force of destiny, just as Nifgaard sack the Cintra city forcing Cyrilla, now a young girl, to flee and Geralt then starts to track her to protect her from the Nifgaard prince using her raw chaos powers to seize his brother's throne..The young Cyrilla fleeing and the shapechanger stuff happens over 20 days or so as far as I can work out..thats me now with one episode left to watch.

Just bear in mind the timeline jumping back and forth and things can be lined up fairly easily.

Honestly, after the first couple of episodes it starts making more sense. I think if you go into it expecting something simple, you'll be disappointed, it's fantasy so there's lots of strange names, places, events etc.

Episode 4 is where everything fell into place for me. I didn't realise the three storylines were taking place in separate times. I knew Yennefer was 80 years before Geralt's storyline, but I thought his and Ciri's were taking place at the same time until episode 4. That's when I realised what they were doing.

I'd never read the books and I've only played parts of The Witcher 3, so I was pretty much watching it blind. I like to read up on things after I've seen an episode, to learn more backstory or get more context, and I accidentally spoiled who a certain character actually was in episode 4. Spoilers never bother me, but this one did.

The clues are that subtle, it's not hard to understand why people would miss them even if they are paying attention. If you look away from the screen for even a second, you could miss important information. I don't need things to hit me over the head, but I don't want to feel like I'm doing mental gymnastics in order to keep up.

I watched it through to the end. I felt the convoluted structure made it needlessly difficult. And although it was entertaining, I couldn’t help feeling that it was a bit of a waste of time. The final scene of the series takes place just a short time after the opening scene, within the context of the story, so although I watched about 8 hours of televison, the main thread of the story barely progressed beyond the first episode. Everything else was backstory for Geralt and Yennifer. It all seemed... underwhelming.

His manner is flat and the speech devoid of feeling because the magic and potion alterations done to him to make witchers ..that is dna alterations\mutations..make him first sterile, quick to heal, channel magic, turns skin greyish and hair white and also disconnects the emotions to remove the fear response.

The procedure that makes witchers almost always kills the child they try to mutate, which explains why there are so few of them.

The video games explain much of this.

Bit disappointed we havent seen yennefer's stuffed unicorn....

Having read all the books multiple times, and played all Witcher games...

The series is very much book based with a bit more backstory to Yennefers upbringing.

It's mostly rushed with a confusing flashback to bring in one of the major characters from the start.

A lot of the scenes are downplayed or altered to make them more kids friendly?

The characters looks have been changed to make the casting more inclusive/diverse.

Their abilities and personalities have also been changed, which probably bothers me the most.

Lore wise it does link back to the books but like I said, it's rushed and altered for safer viewing.

I would imagine this first series was Netflix testing the water to see what the reaction was like to it, it seems to have gone down very well so the second season will have far more funding, that seems to be the way it goes these days.

Loved every bit and couldn't get enough even tho I knew nothing of the books or games. Took me awhile to understand the diff timelines running but it all came together. Looking forward to series 2.

Anya Chalotra Does an amazing job, imo the 3 mains are almost perfectly cast.

I actually downloaded the witcher 3 to play through again after watching this. It's the best thing on the telly box for me at the moment.
