Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday is one of the few songs that can make me cry. Such a voice and what a message. And Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, you can feel the emotion in her voice throughout the song. Music can be very powerful sometimes

One of them is Dame Shirley Bassey. She was 70 when she sang this:

"Can’t believe these 2 haven’t been mentioned yet, probably the greatest English male singers to date......

Paul Rodgers

Robert Plant "

Sorry, but neither of those come close to Steve Marriott. It has often been said by the critics that Robert Plant modelled his singing on Steve Marriott.

A female singer who doesn’t get enough of a mention is Judith Durham.

Greatest short set in history is freddie mercury with queen at live aid.

One of greatest vocal performances of a single song is bruce dickinson iron maiden, rime of the ancient mariner (flight 666).

And the most versatile, most powerful, never to be seen again vocal range ever was axl rose, guns n roses 88-93.. nothing comes close. Before he lost his voice, lost his energy and turned into an oompa loompa, with a voice like mickey mouse.

I think the fire engines played great live sets, 15 minutes in the early 80s. Queen are most definitely not my cuppa.

"Bruce Springsteen is up there. Power! "

Absolutely! If we’re talking voices though, then technical ability doesn’t matter at all - Mariah can really sing but god knows I’d do everything in my power to avoid listening to her!

Cash, Elvis and Nelson all need to be up there. Orbison, Henley, Charles and Porter all brilliant too as great singers with great voices.

The best example I can possibly think of is the video for ‘Should I fall behind’ with all the E Street band singing a verse. Bruce’s voice at the crescendo is magical

For pure vocal ability and range, I'd say Roy Orbison, Freddie Mercury, and surprisingly for some, Boy George.
