Kind of. A friend and I were looking at photos of Till Lindemann, and he said "you can tell he's German, from that bit of his face" indicating the area below his nose. And around his mouth. "His, er, muzzle?" I said. Neither of us knew. So here i am. Does he look German, and what is that area of a face called?!

"His, er, muzzle?" I said. Neither of us knew. So here i am. Does he look German, and what is that area of a face called?!"

Perioral I believe but could be wrong

. I think it is still just about possible to identify certain nationalities especially if they don’t have a history of intercultural influxes. Now you're talking about a nationality I do have experience of and yes, they look very Scandinavian but it’s the attitudes and behaviour that identify Germans straight away..

I've had a Google, i reckon you're right! Certainly sounds more sciencey than "muzzle"!

Interesting.

I'm not an anthropologist but there's a cross over between anthropology and archaeology especially where physical features are particular to a specific population. For instance until recently there was a certain structure of bones in the foot only found in one area of Norfok.

So someone can look German or French or whatever and their family will probably have lived quite a distance from the borders so their genes were less diluted.

I don't know what that bit of the face is called though and I think Till Lindemann looks European

Peri just means surroudning

So perioral is surrounding to the mouth

There is also a “perianal” area

There are more specific words, such as nasolabial fold. Just google facial anatomy and enjoy the diagrams
