It was never ment to be a xmas song. They literally stuck the bells in as a last minute thought when they relased it at xmas time.

I mean, 2000 Miles is about the guitarist of The Pretenders who died young. That's not very festive, it's only a Christmas song because Christmas and snow is mentioned so let's ban that too.

If we're being purists and talking about celebrating the birth of Christ, alot of what we do at Christmas has nothing to do that, most of its pagan or 19th/20th Centry additions. I get that Jesus recieved presents but not under a tree, and there was a distinct lack of snow. Absolutely no wearing of silly jumpers and getting rat-faced. If we took away all the non-Christmas 'Christmas' things, there'd be barely any Christmas - just a few prayers, carols, 3 gifts and back to work the next day.

But yeah, not a song about Christmas but like trees, snow, cards, booze and over-spending, it's now very much associated with the festive season.
