You and a lot other's in the same boat...and is a modern day infliction. Sadly I have no solution for you but I do hope you find the strength to resist.

I know that a lot of gambling sites, and now banks, will voluntarily ban you if you ask them to. That may help, as well as seeking help from a support group.*

*I have no personal experience in the matter.

As lorenzo said about groups out there. The hardest part is telling someone that you have an addiction

I don't have a problem but was married to a man who did when there was no help at all.

Google "help with gambling addiction" , look at the posters in the bookies window somewhere in small print there's sometimes a link to help or have a chat with your doctor if you feel able to. As far as I know there's an NHS helpline too.

I hope you can take that first step.

My dad had a gambling problem before I was born but got past it. I know it sounds cliche but it's true that the first step is admitting you have a problem so well done. Also being open with others in your life that you do. For my dad his was triggered by feeling he wasn't capable of being a financial provider and then ended up caught in the trap of chasing wins to try to cover up money he had lost gambling. He was so secretive about it that he attempted to leave my mum instead of admit his problem. Funnily enough the exact same thing has happened with a friends husband. I think a lot of men feel that providing financially is part of their role as a husband/partner and struggling to do so can make them feel like less of a man. Some turn to gambling in secret rather than admit to struggling with money. I'm not trying to suggest this is the reasons behind it for you, I'm just saying that there's often more behind it than simply enjoying gambling and it helps to try to unpick that within yourself.

Contact gamcare, easily found on google. It’s a support line specifically for gambling. You’ll get all the help and advice you need there. Good luck OP

Gamcare and GameStop buddy. The best places for advice and help.

You can self exclude from every site, and signing up to these will help you. Having close friends who have gone through it, I know what it’s like from the outside.

Be strong and resist any urges. Some banks can automatically decline gambling transactions if you ask them.

Good luck, and chin up. You can get through it. Take each day one at a time.

There are lots of help available. Start by self excluding in bookmakers and online sites. See if you have any local addiction places you can visit. The person I know who went to GA didn't rate it as it was very religious. But found a excellent support 1-1 therapy with a local addiction group.

Remember addiction is a form of mental health you have done the first step admitting you have a problem

You're one of many, hun. There'll be communicaties online where you can talk to other people who have the same problem. You haven't mentioned debt but if that has happened because of it there's loads of help for that. Please start now. I knew a guy from here who had the same problem, he chose to tackle it by replacing it with gear as an addiction. He died last September of a giant heart attack, he was only 44. People go under cos they don't ask for help but you have. You'll be OK.

Horrible industry. Listening to a sport radio station at the moment and the amount of advertising and pushing it down people’s throats it awful. Should go the way of the tobacco industry.

It makes me fucking furious, love. It's every other advert on TV. I know people have to control their own behaviour but it does need regulating, it's massively unhelpful.

There are helplines that nearly all bookies have printed in their shops or online ,fair play to you for seeking help ..huge salute l hope you can find peace and contentment on your road , l can't lie ,l started gambling a few years ago ,but only all in cents ..my main horse bet is a 20c lucky 15..€3....if anything back ..great ...if not ..only €3....and my soccer bet is a €2 accumulator...l just simply couldn't afford to be punting big money ...the horses and soccer teams l pick win some times ...the other times not so much but certainly couldn't afford to be punting big...wages are too hard earned to give them to the bookies

If you are not already getting support, I think you need to, as it is easy to fall back into old ways.

Hope you can beat the habit.

Brilliant op, keep positive

I had a gambling problem myself and ended up signing up to gamblock to keep me away from online sites and told the managers of my local betting shops to bar me. I buy the odd scratch card now but that's about it. Those steps I took helped me no end

It will last! Be positive. It is almost 2020. And you can start the New Year with a clean slate.

And think about it. If you get tempted to gamble, immediately go and do something else and distract yourself. The battle is all in the mind.

If the urge is still there, come back here and ask for forumites to encourage and support you! I have read all the comments on this thread and we are a very caring community! x

It sound like you have compulsive personality I'd focus first on that.

Otherwise you might just move from one addiction to another.

Thats not uncommon

Addiction is so cruel..when it's working for you it's like the vice is your best friend. When it's not it's your worst nightmare.

3 weeks is a great start but the hard work is yet to follow. Stick to your decision. Diversion tactics work Don't act on that need, it will pass after a short time. And thought processes will begin to change. In time those thoughts become less.

It will get easier and things will fall into place.Good luck ...I'm rooting for you x
