Haggling the price

Going to buy a car tomorrow so I'm getting my haggling head on.

Have you ever got something at a reduced price through the gift of gab?

How much was it? How much did you get it for? And how did you get it?

Rule of thumb. 10 percent off and haggle up. Nothing to lose

That doesnt sound great when I read it back, I wasn't actually sold in the end. I like to think my dad was just joking.

Depends what it is.

You can haggle 20% off pretty easily in most high street jewellers. Bought a couple of watches and saved a decent amount.

Paid for a campervan with cash, got 1k extras thrown in and 2k off list price.

Not ashamed to say I'll always haggle.

I would haggle but 99% of places nowadays put a price tag on everything and wont take a penny less so its a waste of time.

With a car its a bit different.

Most dealers will add say £1K on to the price they want and then take maybe £500 less.

You think you saved £500 but actually paid £500 more.

Find the same car elsewhere, preferably same dealership group, at a lower price and work from that.

Our male half owns a car dealership. Haggling is an easy route to be asking to leave.

Not everyone likes it / tolerates it.

Good luck OP

It just comes down to what profit they got in the car...if you take their finance .. you will get better discount... do nationwide search for similar cars...auto trader has a system that tells you if car is priced well..

I always haggle cars/watches/jewellery/clothes/furniture it's second nature

Spend a bit of time looking on YouTube at car price negotiation.

A lot of car sales garages have been doing it for years and will eat you up and spit you out if you're not prepared.

The standard argument on a used car is that it's priced to sell so no room to move (you need to know if that price is a keen price or not)

Be prepared for them trying to up sell to you !! by them adding paint protection (wouldn't bother) etc etc

Private sales are different and sometimes you can haggle hard as people find it awkward which puts things in your favour.

Rule 1 of negotiating is don't be to keen and be prepared to walk away, if your mindset is I'll buy the car even if I don't get money off you're doomed to failure

If it's a brand new car use something like "car wow"

Good luck

You can haggle most things. Although some places just don’t do it at all, Oak furniture land being one of them.

One of the easiest I’ve found is watches, most brands I’ve got at around 20-25% off. But certain brands and their sought after models are off limits for haggling, it’s full price or you don’t have it.

I did manage to get my house for £15,000 under the original asking price too

Always haggle with a smile and be friendly, flash the cash if needs be as well. See too many guys thinking going in hard and direct will get them a great deal (see Apprentice this season for proof ).

I buy and sell motorcycles all the time, some extras like top boxes or locks I'll throw in if I like the person, so it's not always money that can be haggled

Surely you start at half what they are asking for.

I’m sure that’s how Del Boy worked!

Costa Blanca Spain...

The absolute golden rule is to be prepared to walk away.

If the seller knows that you really want it and thinks that you will buy it whatever then you are fucked.

Well you would be if it was me on the other side.

Did 25 years as a car dealer BTW.

so near and yet so far....

When I bought my car, I’d researched the price and options, bought a 6 month old car and was prepared to walk away if I didn’t get at least a 2k discount... I got it and two free services

My Dad would roll in his grave if I paid the screen price. As long as you don't insult and attack with humour then it's all good. Think outside the box with haggling. They're pre prepared to expect a knockdown on the price so if that's failing throw a curve ball and ask for mats and a full tank of petrol. I've used the petrol one many times and it works private or dealer..

That worked for me with my current car. I couldn't quite get them to £1,000 but £850 isn't bad.

My best, and favourite, was getting my FitFlops at cost price following a random conversation on a train back from Edinburgh. They couldn't sell the stock they had in my size. Postage thrown in.

Lifes departure lounge NN9 Northamptonshire East not West MidlandsMidlands

Whenever I sell a car I always build a haggle factor into the asking price, usually about 10%. Recently sold my Mazda MX5 for the full asking price including the haggle factor.

Taking hard cash on sale is not so easy, banks asking too many questions.

Good luck. Even though car sales are on their arse, trying to get a good deal is almost impossible. They make more money on a finance deal than the mark up on a car so even offering to pay cash doesn’t help.
