Hey hey hey mofos, so, it's almost officially time for many of you to break up from work, head out to pubs, restaurants and other places to eat, drink and be merry.

For those who've worked in the hospitality industry, you'll need no reminders of how hard it can be. For those who haven't, I'm gonna give you an insight, and hopefully something to think about when you're out having a great time.

Your server, bar staff, the person on the till, you need to remember this is also their Xmas too.... And they're spending it serving you for minimum wage. They're far busier than usual, please cut them some slack.

It isn't glamorous for them, yet many make an effort with their appearance, they smile and are polite even though they're frustrated, exhausted, hungry, need the toilet and are trying to remember 50 things at once whilst dodging kids that are running around instead of sitting at the table.

They've probably already been spoken to like absolute shit today and accused of "ruining Xmas" because they're unable to accommodate someones unrealistic expectations.

Many don't get the chance for a proper break, haven't seen their family for christ knows how long, are missing out on their own family gatherings or parties with friends.

In short, be patient, be respectful, wish them a Merry Christmas and don't be too demanding, they're people not miracle workers....

And the last point: when it's closing time, they're not being party poopers spoiling your fun when they're trying politely to get you to leave - they're trying to do a job which they'll probably have to be back in again in roughly 8 hours time, and they still need to travel home, shower, eat if they're lucky and sleep, get back up for work, get ready, try and snaffle some breakfast down them, travel back to work and be expected to be bright eyes and bushy tailed with a smile on their face ready to do it all again....

Lol we dont see a penny of that. The only extra money is made in any tips that are given. Christmas eve, christmas day and boxing day i have 17 hour shifts on each day last thing we need is people being unnecessarily rude, disrespectful or arguing when we need to shut up the bar to clean up. We are human you know. We get tired after being on our feet for excessively long shifts.

I'm lucky to get on average 2% over the whole shift

I don't expect tips, but they really help and can make the difference between having gas in the meter or not. I got 37p off a table of 34 earlier this year that had me run ragged all bloody night.

Having previously worked for Sainsburys for a long time I can promise that Christmas is an absolute nightmare! I hope anyone in retail or hospitality has a easy Xmas and I hope they get to enjoy some kind of festive fun

We get to choose 1 key day off. I'm off NYE evening but working the day and I have my chosen day off... NYD. Without doubt the worst day of the year to work coz nobody wants to cook so they come out to eat, are hanging like dead fish, feel like shit and lacking patience.

Get more abuse and complaints on new years day than any full month!

Oh, we were all banned from asking for specific days off this year cos everyone changed their minds last year

All I can remember is breakfast on the 23rd, off the 24th, breakfast on the 25th, off the 26th (I think)... can't remember the next few days, then six hour bar NYE night and a ten hour split on New Year's Day.

Could be worse. I worked in a brassiere on the seafront a few years ago. Shut at tea time in Christmas Eve til Boxing Day but we'd get bloody bollocked all Boxing Day. One year I did from 12 midday on NYE til half past midnight on NYD then came back in at 10am.

goes for anyone who has to work over Christmas it is not just NHS or bar workers it is those that have to support children in homes because their family are in prison or abused their child and have sections on them we work 24/7 too for minimum wage and get shitty times and do not go home for days nor see family or friends

Having been working in retail in all different shapes and forms for 30 years, and had my fair share of obnoxious, arrogant and abusive customers, I’m always exceptionally nice to shop workers and servers. It takes a lot for me to complain and I always give a cash tip to any hard working servers.

Hiding in the shadows

I've worked in hospitality, in one form or another all my life.

My over a decade as a licensee running my own pub/restaurant.

I never saw my Eldest over Christmas, New Year in all those years.

He spent it with his dad, and his family

Yes, it was my choice of job, it provided a damn good income, that gave him a good life & an excellent education.

But it hurt not seeing him on those days.

I'm working tonight, I'll be on the door.

I know I'll be dealing with folks, who probably started drinking at lunch time, who won't understand why at 19.00hrs tonight I'm not letting them in, or having to ask them to leave.

I get more abuse, punches thrown at me over the 'festive' period than accross the entire year.

I'll smile, take their shit, call them a taxi, make sure they're safe til it arrives, then wave them merrily on their way home to their families.

Please be nice to those of us working, so you can have your nights out x

Really hope that was an attempt at 'humour'. The 'choice' for many in low paid work is often very limited, for all sorts of reasons. Sadly, there aren't enough 'better' jobs for everyone who'd like one and in any case, *someone* has to do all the low paid work or the country would grind to a halt. Doesn't mean those workers aren't entitled to a bit of respect and consideration if they're fulfilling their duties.

That is only because staff are willing to work long hours for low pay. If all staff united and demanded better pay, they would get it. Problem is those who will take low paid jobs kill the wages structure.

Your server, bar staff, the person on the till, you need to remember this is also their Xmas too.... And they're spending it serving you for minimum wage. They're far busier than usual, please cut them some slack.

It isn't glamorous for them, yet many make an effort with their appearance, they smile and are polite even though they're frustrated, exhausted, hungry, need the toilet and are trying to remember 50 things at once whilst dodging kids that are running around instead of sitting at the table.

They've probably already been spoken to like absolute shit today and accused of "ruining Xmas" because they're unable to accommodate someones unrealistic expectations.

Many don't get the chance for a proper break, haven't seen their family for christ knows how long, are missing out on their own family gatherings or parties with friends.

It's not as simple as that as most people over about 22 would be able to tell you (Oh, you're in your mid-40s? My mistake)

When people don't have much in the way of qualifications, but plenty of experience in hospitality then that's the job they can get quickly, which they often need to do as they can hardly build up a decent amount of savings so they can study or take some time out to think about their options. Not when their jobs are low-paid and they're relying on constant income to keep the roof over their heads.

The same will apply to other such jobs like those in the shopfloor and till operating roles in retail.

Incidentally would that be your advice to others whenever their job gets a bit too tricky? Perhaps the London Met police should have downed tools when the London riots kicked off?
