How I remember Xmas

It might be through rose tinted glasses but it didn't seem anywhere near as commercialised..

.. How do you remember Xmas as a child(hopefully it's good)

Trying not to ch.ke if you had the lucky shilling hid in the Christmas pudding

Butterscotch angel delight in glasses

Stocking hanging on the fireplace with nuts and a satsuma in it

I tried explaining to my ten year old that in the olden days Advent calendars just had pictures behind the doors...she looked incredulous!

My Dad playing practical jokes on me with presents (too many to mention), and riding my new bike with an ill fitting horendous jumper that ma Grandma had knitted

I always had the best Christmas. We (my mum, step-dad and I) would go to my nan and gramps Christmas Eve afternoon and stay till tea time Boxing Day.

My Nan and gramp would have been preparing for months in advance the food. Making sausage rolls, mine pies, sorting out the Ham, my Grampy would pickle shallots and eggs and my Nan would make a home made trifle and her own custard slices.

They had a front room with a roaring log fire on the go and me, my Nan and gramp would be sat watching old films. Christmas Eve I’d get tiddly on home made punch and “snowballs” and babycham and my step-dad and mum would be in the back room watching telly as he was an anti social type.

I just remember being amongst family, feeling loved and being well fed

Happy times. I miss them (grand-parents) every single day but I was lucky to have them well into my 30’s.

Making paper chains with my brother and sister. One present each from mum and dad and a jumbo colouring book with crayons from my nan. Dancing around the Christmas tree in a long dress and eating lots of chocolate which we were never usually allowed. This is actually making me sad thinking back to happy times with my loving family.x

I remember being woken up far too early for Christmas day, then being dragged to church by my mum and being jealous that my dad was Protestant and could just decide to not go

Next up was breakfast at grandma's with some extra family if they were visiting early. Back to ours for Christmas proper where everyone would meet, stuff our faces, open presents, and fall asleep watching a film.

It hasn't changed much

My stocking was my dad’s football sock, normally had an orange, a chocolate santa, new pencil and or a small figure

I always had to be woken up as my parents were impatient for me to get up.

Dinner was always chicken, dished up just as the Queen’s speech finished. Adults would then sleep for an hour

Tea was jam sandwiches and a slice of Christmas cake whilst playing a game of cards before bed

Having to help my Dad prepare the Turkey.

October we would go to the Turkey farm, I would get to choose it, we would take it home and fatten it up ready for Dad to despatch it and I would help gut and pluck it in time for Christmas Dinner

I remember boxes of apples and tangerines.

And my Neins Christmas cake which had been covered in icing so thick Dad had to chisel it.

I can remember sneaking down stairs to peek at my presents early Christmas morning and sitting on the stairs waiting for Dad to get up

My Dad loved Christmas. Always get up super early,shed a tear for him and light a candle before the chaos starts

Not so chaotic now my boys have left home but still carry out that ritual.
