I see it all the time when you go out especially when they walk with the buggie so they cant see what they are up to, they are probably using facebook or something like that, what is your view of it is it being responsible?

Never, I don't understand the whole phone thing tbh unless it's an emergency why just why? And what is so important? More important than your kids? Life?

That's really quite judgemental. You have no idea what they're looking at.

Do you have kids shag?

If not then it's very hard for you to pass judgement in any form on how a parent manages their children and time.

One of my bugbears is that.

Nothing to do with me but seeing some useless wonder pushing a pushchair whilst checking their Facebook grinds my gears

I think it's absolutely fine to sometimes chat on your phone or look at something when out with your kids.

Having said that I have on many occasions seem parents totally ignore their child as they are too busy with their phone.

On one occasion I remember a child in a buggy on the bus trying to talk to his mum, who was doing something on her phone (she didn't look up from it once in 20 minutes) totally ignored him them after a couple of minutes shouting at him to shut the fuck up!

There has to be a balance.

There will always be parents who don't give their kids the attention they need. Phones are just the latest method of distraction.

I used to use the land-line when I was at home on my own with the kids. If they tried to talk to me I'd tell them to wait until I'd finished.

Wow. Huge generalisation. As a single dad of two, when the youngest is in the buggy and eldest on the buggy board, this is a rare bit of time I get to use to talk to someone.

I’ll either be texting the person I’m meeting to let them know I’m undoubtedly running late or calling them to do the same. Time it very limited with kids, if you’re a parent, you know this.

I think their attention should be on their child. We go into Starbucks on a Friday and there is a mum who is there with a little tot. Mum is on her phone the whole time, it breaks my heart to see the little girl sitting there sad and silent...

Well said, some ppl live in this very ideal world dont they. I don't have kids but most of my friends do and so does my reg guy, they never get any time so when the kids are occupied they have to take there moment.

No.

We're raising a generation who believe they're of secondary importance to Facebook or chatting to someone else.

If it's to let someone know you're running late or similar then yes, of course. Get it done then put your phone away.

The one I really hate is when you see other parents at the swings with their kids and they're completely ignoring them for phone time.

Phubbing your kids isn't right... and we all know it really

I've brought up two kids as a single parent and 90% of the time my phone was turned off as didn't need to talk to others as always prefered seeing them in person, also the kids didn't invariably make me run late. Bringing up the kids was a rewarding and fulfilling thing for me and "my time" a marvelous bonus not a necessity. I get that it had it's frustrations and hardships but that just seemed a natural downside to having the kids permanently ... 27 years done and dusted now is me time but luckily still don't have to do it on the phone

Absolutely agree

How do you know shes not calling her sister to ask about a poorly parent? Or texting the dad as somethings come up?

I use my phone when I'm with my child, does it make me a bad parent? No. Maybe I'm texting her step mum to arrange picking her up from school? Maybe I'm on the phone to the hospital as I spend far too much time there?

This is why I teach my daughter to not make judgements about people and their circumstances.

I purposely don’t unless it’s an emergency. I have to watch my 7 year old like a hawk as he has no sense of danger, no spatial awareness and will talk to anyone.

It’s not something I see many parents do anyway if i’m honest, but regardless of that, it’s none of my business.

We have a rule that no one is allowed their phone/technololgy at all, at mealtimes.

As for using their phone whilst pushing their pushchair, how do you know they hadn't been at the park for 3 hours and spent all that time playing with their child? Maybe their child had been playing up for hours and the parent needed some 'me time'.

Parents are allowed to do some stuff for themselves during the day too you know.

Why be so judgemental?

People get judgemental, and people get defensive.

To those that are judgemental, it happens so get over it. It happens for many different reasons. And it's not limited to just people with kids.

To those defensive about it, have you honestly never been knocked in to with a pram, or kids running around wild while their parent is not paying attention on the phone and thought "get off your phone you stupid cunt, and watch what is going on around you?"

I know I have. I'm not afraid to admit it despite knowing that sometimes they will have had a solid reasonable reason to be focused on their phone.

What I do is stop walking, move in near a wall or corner and make the text/phonecall if I'm likely to be distracted.

What if they’re following google maps for directions? I’ve done that a few times. Plus... it’s sort of the opposite way around now - my 13 year old glued to her phone 24/7 and me fighting to get any conversation out of her.

I don't believe for one moment that every parent that is on the phone whilst out with their children has a legitimate reason though ... unfortunately the call of social media is very great for lots and lots of people. Only have to go to restaurants or pubs to realise that your table is the only one actually talking more than sometimes nowadays!

I’m not judging anyone but I am saying they are missing out. I work with families so I see it all the time. They’re not in a strange place getting directions, they not working, they’re on FB and WhatsApp and make no secret of it. No that doesn’t apply to everyone but it does apply to a lot of people, not just when they’re walking around either. I think it’s a sad sign of the times.

Similar subject, but I work in a hotel and I often see families come down to eat, all plugged into various devices and it annoys me at time. Though I appreciate it when families come down to the bar on an evening in particular, and instead of phones and tablets they have stuff like puzzles and games that everyone can enjoy as a family.

"I’m on mine quite a bit sometimes when I’m doing stuff with my kids. Means I can work and spend time with them at the same time. Better than piling them to a child minders whilst I sit in the office. How do you all know what people are doing on their phones

hence my comment re following google maps whilst walking. I genuinely have done this many a time with my child when somewhere new... people are so quick to judge. "

They’re not in a strange place getting directions, they not working, they’re on FB and WhatsApp and make no secret of it. No that doesn’t apply to everyone but it does apply to a lot of people, not just when they’re walking around either. I think it’s a sad sign of the times. "

That's really quite judgemental. You have no idea what they're looking at.

this OP

Mine is used for work purposes and I have my computer on my phone.

How do you know what they are looking at OP"

Agreed but would you let your children run around, in the street, whilst you're working on your phone?

"Do you have kids shag?

If not then it's very hard for you to pass judgement in any form on how a parent manages their children and time.

It’s always those without kids who like to pass judgement

Very true

Some people should Spend less time judging others and more time concentrating on their own lives. "

True. I have my rules for my kids which I’m sure other people do. I’m only really bothered about my own to be honest!

No of course not. And nobody is saying that, but unless you are looking over their shoulder (then stop being fucking nosey and rude) or they are blatantly making it obvious what they are looking at you have no idea what they are truely doing on their phone or how important it might be.

Which is exactly what it comes down to, some will not be doing anything other than social media while some will have a serious reason to be on their phone.

There is no high ground opinion to this whole thing because there are "right and wrong' reasons for doing why they are doing so.

Those that are glued to their phone need to look at themselves but won't because they don't give a shit in the first place.

Meh, it doesn't bother me really. As long as they aren't putting the phone before their child or getting in my way then it's fine.

It's easy to judge but that could be the first five or ten minutes to have some 'me' time that parent has had all day.

I have studied child psychology and education and there is a worrying trend between parental interaction and the increased daily use of mobile phones and child development such as speech and toilet training. I understand that every situation is different and every child develops differently, these are just statistical trends that are appearing over time.

But seriously, there seems to be a lot said about being judgemental and/or defensive on this topic. My take is to try and not underestimate the power of confirmation bias.

I'm not a parent, but they can't to win with some people. They're either helicopter parents raising a generation of entitled narcissists or feckless chavs addicted to their phones.

And this is what they notice in schools unfortunately. Delayed development because of a lack of interaction, particularly with regard to speech. It’s not all parents and it’s not all the time but staff are aware of the ones that have been raised in that environment.

I imagine to have such a profound effect on development the phone usage would need to be significantly impeding parental-child interaction. This is probably an extreme example. Most phone usage by parents will likely fall somewhere at the less extreme end...

I was just about to say the same thing to both points, I still turn my phone to silent when out so I can do what I want without interruption and I can't steer the pram with one hand anyway, them wheels now go every direction !!

On another note, I received a lovely graze on my heel today while out, someone walked right into me , they were not looking where they were going as they were on their phone ....buggers !!

I work in a busy area with a lot of traffic there's a junior school near my work and I see it all the time young kids running on and off the road with parents oblivious on there phones, I'm a dad and understand time is precious but so are your children I miss walking my lad to school it a perfect time to talk, even when out with him I will only use my phone when it's needed. The same when out with family and friends it's time you will never get back and the chances are what ever is on your phone will still be there later on. Enjoy the time you have with you family and friends. Well that's my two pence worth anyway

Why be so judgemental?"

I'm not being judgemental!

I'm saying it's very sad that technically is taking over our lives. "

You make a lot of sense darling

"I have studied child psychology and education and there is a worrying trend between parental interaction and the increased daily use of mobile phones and child development such as speech and toilet training. I understand that every situation is different and every child develops differently, these are just statistical trends that are appearing over time.

And this is what they notice in schools unfortunately. Delayed development because of a lack of interaction, particularly with regard to speech. It’s not all parents and it’s not all the time but staff are aware of the ones that have been raised in that environment. "

I imagine to have such a profound effect on development the phone usage would need to be significantly impeding parental-child interaction. This is probably an extreme example. Most phone usage by parents will likely fall somewhere at the less extreme end... "

I think personally the worrying thing for me reading the study at the time was that when it was understood that the child was having development issues then why not limit your screen time and spend more time to help your child.

My daughter had speech development problems so we spent hours on phonics cards. She is now the best speller in her year taking her GCSE's and only occasionally drops her r`s

I'm a mum and I use my phone when out with my kid. I also spend a lot of time focused on him. People can judge me based on a minute snapshot if they wish.

I suffered badly from postnatal depression. My phone was my lifeline. I was often talking to someone to avoid having a panic attack, or reading about coping mechanisms. Other times I was talking to friends to stop me losing what little sanity I had left.

It's so easy to judge people and make snap judgements. Reminds me of that saying 'you don't know what demons people are fighting. Be kind always'

When I'm on school runs and days out, no I dont use it except to take pics and vids.

If we're over the park and shes on the secure playground where I can see her at all times, then yes I have my phone out.

No Facebook or social media though, most likely pokemon go as theres at least 3 pokestops next to the playground.

Maybe they’re googling something for their kids, mine are always asking me to look stuff up........ no doubt half the people that think it’s not acceptable are the ones that use their phones whilst driving, idle in traffic or on a red light

"I work in a busy area with a lot of traffic there's a junior school near my work and I see it all the time young kids running on and off the road with parents oblivious on there phones, I'm a dad and understand time is precious but so are your children I miss walking my lad to school it a perfect time to talk, even when out with him I will only use my phone when it's needed. The same when out with family and friends it's time you will never get back and the chances are what ever is on your phone will still be there later on. Enjoy the time you have with you family and friends. Well that's my two pence worth anyway "

No, they’re judging people they know nothing about who they’ve just seen in the street, who could easily be mums like her. Fighting demons and trying to stay sane...

Some of the people on this thread saying people are to judgy would be the first to judge a parant who was on their phone when their child gets run over.

As with the impaired speech development example above, this is a very extreme example that is clearly problematic parenting. There are shades of grey in between the extreme of ‘you must never touch your phone when your child is present’ and being so consumed with your phone to the extent your child ends up under a car. On this thread it feels as though anyone who touches their phones in their child’s presence is being judged. They aren’t all neglectful awful parents, is my point.
