Gym woes

By *adyJayne OP   Woman

Burnleyish (She/They)

I'm setting up a thread for general sadness about gym related things.

3 sessions in 3 days. (All six sets if 10 reps with 30seconds for bike, wall sits etc)

Day one. Barbell complex with airbike

Day two. Swiss ball sit ups, Squats, wall sit, kettle bell swings, plank

Day three. Deadlifts, sandbag slams, v-sit, 1km row.

I'm meant to be taking stuff up to my attic today... I am walking like John Wayne crossed with Bambi

My bed does the same! What a coincidence.

Every day is a bit overkill. Your body needs time to recover.

Sounds like you may have what’s called DOMS ( Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) it will pass once your body gets used to he new routine honest lol, just take it steady and keep stretching after a few more sessions it will be a thing of the past and you shouldn’t get it again x

You maybe need more rest days or to stretch more if you are aching that bad!

It is indeed DOMS

I've had my PT 3 years and I go to the gym at least 3 times a week and run 3 times a week.

The days I don't get DOMS are the days I know I wasn't working hard enough in my sessions... (Few and far between)

Even if your at home just run a hot bath lay in it for a bit and you will see in the morning or next day the muscles will feel a lot better they will slowly start to rebuild and also try to do one body part a day

For example if your legs today do shoulder tomorrow as your totally using a different muscle group

Pushed myself very hard after 2 weeks in hospital. I will be fine in the morning. Just needed a moan. If I could be arsed to go for a run I know I'd loosen up... I just have friends staying overnight tonight and I really need to get the crap out of the spare room and into the attic.

Depends on the person. I still get DOMs two years in but it's nowhere near as bad as in the beginning unless I do something totally new or don't work a certain muscle group for more than a couple of weeks.

Stop procrastinating lol!! Put some music on that motivates you and get your running kit on!! Then you can come back and hit the spare room hard haha x

No big gym woes here.

Lower back has been in spasm for a few days, easing off now, should be back in the gym tomorrow.

Coming to the the end of my training cycle, all the hard work is paying off and new strength is starting to show through as total workload decreases.

Few weeks left and I'll have some good numbers to build from for next year's competitions.

It sounds weird, but I get a real kick out of motivationing people. It’s such a good feeling helping someone push through the barriers to achieve the goal they want or just pushing further than they thought they could

Make sure you warm up properly then stretch before your workout, then stretch again before you finish. That will reduce the Doms!

You remind me of the school nurse who told me while bleeding from the nose that I wasn't having a nose bleed.

If your muscles are sore and the onset was delayed, it's DOMS.

Because I am a massive nerd I have also read research papers about it. (And nutrition but that's a whole other story of confliction)

There are also papers that say it's not a bad thing, ones that draw conclusions as to what causes it (and others that say they don't know)

What I do know is that over 3 years it's not done me any harm. Normally I wouldn't train with Doms I'd factor in an active recovery day but I couldn't switch my session today because of family/work/festivities..

I know I'm stronger, fitter and healthier than I was 3 years ago. I know my recovert from a dislocated and broken shoulder was faster, and far more complete than then hospital, surgeon and physio was expecting and they put that down to my weight and stamina training.

Mine is due to work exhaustion as well... in combination with the dark nights. I do better in the summer months when it’s still light at 9pm.

“Stuff” is very important I’ll have you know.

I’m just back from doing gym “stuff” but don’t worry, I put in a shift for you

Oh good, thank you! Now I don’t need to bother going til the New Year.

Can I moan about having surgery on my hand and now I can’t do a thing even though I’m motivated?"

I can relate to this. I stuck an axe through my finger the day before I went on holiday and was out of it for months. Playing catch up now...

"Can I moan about the fact that I’ve lost my gym mojo and struggling to get myself there of late?

Can I just say I’m going there today so get your sorry ass down there too?!!

I'm loving you two peer pressuring each other into going

She shamed me into going on Monday when I’d suddenly become a tv darts fan and used that to procrastinate.

Well I’ve suddenly become a fan of housework ... and stuff. So I can’t go tonight.

Housework? And.......stuff? Stuff???? OMG you crack me up!!!

It’s mostly confidence versus pain threshold. The tissue that grew back was super sensitive so simply touching anything with it was a mission. Over time it’s got a lot more durable and the pain disappeared. Ironically a lot of it has no feeling at all where I severed the nerves which is a head fuck in itself!!
