I think you'll find that those are the 'sell by' dates in which case Tesco's are well within their rights to sell them to you. The govt recently made changes to the way products are stamped as there was much confusion regarding 'use by', 'sell by', 'best before', and 'display until'.

'Display until' and 'sell by' date stamps are for stock control purposes only and the food contained within is still perfectly edible. ‘Best before’ dates relate to food quality. When the date runs out, the food isn’t harmful, but may begin to lose flavour and texture. ‘Use by’ dates are a different matter — they are usually found on food that goes off quickly, including meat products and ready-prepared salads.

The Food Standards Agency warns that food and drink should not be consumed after the ‘use by’ date, even if it looks and smells fine.

I've shoped online with Tesco and Asda and both are guilty of picking up the first items off the shelves saying they don't have time to check the dates.

I've called them as they have sometimes sent things with a 'use by' of the same day delivered. They are used to it and usually give a refund.

Asking for a refund will not give away your mystery shopper friend due to the volume of orders they receive.

As said though, they are entitled to sell products with a near date but it does their reputation no good.

Hmm, yes it does seem to be a problem with dairy goods mainly ,the thing is they would have to sell it on the cheap shelf if it was still in the shop , it needs sorting really it's not hard to keep your customers happy is it , as you say you can only judge them by their actions , cheers

I agree. I get all my fruit and veg from the market and it grieves me to pay supermarket prices for inferior produce.

They have a delivery slot time of within 4hours im sure of it. Least they used to do a couple of years ago when I used the online thingy so im sure they still will do. Anyhow I digress the terms and thingies clearly state that they must deliver to you within a 4hour time slot of leaving the store yeah. If they are late and go slightly over the 4hour deadline then you get all your shopping at half price.

If they are as feckin late as you say they are then im sure you will get it all for nothing. Specialy if you tell them that you are mentioning and moaning about them on the public forums of a swinging site. Im sure they will be most moved by all the bad press haha

Think you mis read the post, it's about items near their use by date not late deliveries.

On the subject of deliveries being on time thought...I was decorating one sunday so was waiting for items I needed for lunch and the next day for lunches. My delivery was due at 12. At 11 I got a call to say they delivery truck had broken down and they were waiting for another one. Same message at 2 then at 3.30 my delivery arrived minus all my chilled produce (firdge and freezer food) as they did not get the chilled unit to the good in time.

Not only did they bugger up my dinner, they left it too late for me to go shopping. I called them and explained and they paid a driver overtime to collect the items from the store and deliver them to me. Not all bad en!

if you can - buy local and maybe save some of your local shops from closing.

it maybe just save some of your your community

ok so its probably too late for those that have a " Tesco~Local " etc.

we were surprised at some of the food prices from the local shops - and the quality is mostly a damn site better !!

most of our traditional shops in Mansfield have closed down now ,only the charity shops can afford the rent , the council have spent thousands putting up posters in empty shop windows to make them look like they are full of goods and shoppers ??,crazy , the market used to attract lots of shoppers ,but they ecided to take 2years changing the cobble stones for pavers ,at cgod knows what cost , the traders never came back , just a hand full of bric a brac stores , the pavers are now covered in spearmint and bubble gum , lol, so i'm afraid we don't have many options other than the 10 supermarkets we now have around the 4 mile square town , i blame the by pass roads myself , no one goes into towns or villages anymore , but thats progress init

99.9% of the population have a freezer so if someone can't be arsed to get their shit together and stock up on essntial items that can be frozen it's hardly Tesco's fault for not making sure you're stocked up, is it.

Am I missing something? UYou had food delivered on the 17th, with a sell by date of the 18th? How is that out of date?

It's common sense that they'll do that, no one buyus the almost out of date stuff of the shelves.

I think you can specify that you don't want almost out of date items when you order.

Great if you are a shopfitter I guess. Let's ignore the effect that their aggressive locating of stores, loss leading pricing and low wages have on local economies.
