The ex dumped me out of the blue in July after a long relationship. Christmas is upon us and while we've remained on good terms I'm struggling to make sense of the present he has bought me for Christmas.

Would you buy your an expensive gift for Christmas? If so why? What would motivate you ?

I'd never buy an ex that I'm just on good terms with a gift that is expensive. In fact I'd not buy any friend a gift that is much more than £50, with the exception of me wanting to enforce our friendship.

I may spend a little more if I wanted to get back with them.

If they did that for me but I'm not interested in getting back together, I would question them why, and I'd tell them there is no way I could accept a gift at that cost.

If I was good mates with, cared about them and valued them the yes, the same as I would any other friend of I had the finances to do so.... however...

If they had a new relationship then no, I feel it would be wrong of me to so especially if it was an expensive gift that could "upstage" the new partner so to speak

He wanted to get back with me. I was having none of it.

I'm very good friends with some of my ex's and they get presents to the same value as other friends (which is pretty much stocking filler / secret santa / token / bottle of tipple - so £10-£20) no ulterior motive just that their friendship is as important to me as other friends. Moreso sometimes. They have seen really sides to me sometimes.
