Bristol

This year our family has cancelled Christmas because of a lot of upsets, bereavement etc. So Christmas day as I shall be alone, ive decided I'm going to make sandwiches and mince pies and buy some cans of drink and tour round Bristol and see if anyone homeless and feed them, as not all like going to shelters, also take some dog food aa lots have their pets with them. Wish me luck.. And a very Happy Christmas to you all xx

What's the point of being alone at Christmas, I don't have to be, I can just go and do something worth while. I don't want to spend money on people who have everything, it shall be spent on those who have nothing.. Thankyou for your kind comments xx

I don't understand why this Country gives to other Countries but never look after their own, the poor war veterans homeless how can that be, they protected us yet nobody protects them. These men were the bravest of the brave, and this is how this country repays them. Six and a half million pounds to Pakistan to build a school. Its a joke. Surely charity begins at home. Food banks, nobody should have to rely on hand outs. This country has got far to expensive to live in. People from other countries want to live in England and think our streets are paved with gold, we work dam hard for what we have.

It's a very nice thing to do, our daughter has learning disabilities and can't get over why ppl sleep rough and it really upsets her, she's very much up for helping the homeless. So good luck and happy Christmas, you maybe saving someone's life this year best giftever

.. I agree there is hep out there but unfortunately not enough.if there was enough help then nobody would be on the streets. x

On a bit of a tangent I do wonder how much harder things are for the homeless as we live more and more in a cashless society.

I rarely carry cash anymore and feel really guilty when telling people that that is why I can't give them anything.

We give 13 BILLION pounds per annum in Aid to foreign countries, the majority of which, do not need it.

All could be better spent in the UK.

And the organised criminal gangs running the various Romanian Big Issue sellers just infuriate me.

Amazing and admirable. Great thread especially for awareness. We all need to do more. im doing 2 shifts for crisis homeless shelters on xmas day and boxing day and taking my son. So a bit of an appreciation and realisation for him to learn about being humbled and giving back. Homelessness isnt always about a choice. It's a bi product of difficult circumstances and it saddens me that we even have any homelessness people in this country. Especially in light if all the empty homes either council or housing associate ran are just sat there and the support funding and help that could be provided. Billions will be spent this year on frivolous items and indulgence with copious amounts of waste and unwanted things yet we still have all these issues. Bad times so every little will help. Giving up your time and effort is the best form of charitable work we can do.

Nobody has to sleep rough, many choose to because shelters don't allow alcohol or other substances to be taken in. Some people choose the rock over somewhere warm and safe to sleep. Which I'm not judging them for, it's their choice and I think what the OP is doing is brilliant and very kind. But we're not leaving people to sleep rough while sending money abroad.

I don’t think it’s a case of either/or. We can fund both but there will always be people who don’t get the help they deserve/are entitled to.

What a wonderful idea.

My friend did this in Birmingham last year, she found one man who told her he was going to a church who were hosting Christmas Dinner. He told her she probably wouldn't find anyone else as several churchs were doing the same. She decided to find one of them and offer to help. She said she had the best time and is volunteering for them again this year.

In Southampton there is normally a 10 wait for one of only 2 emergency beds.

We buried my Mum 5 days before Christmas last year but as she loved Christmas we knew she would have wanted us to go ahead with our plans. We laid a place for her at the table raised a glass to her and talked and laughted about her and some of the terrible presents she had bought us all over the years. That is how my family coped and everyone one has there own way of doing this.

What your doing is a wonderful thing and Im sure you are going to help and brighten up many peoples Christmas Day.

Aid to foreign countries is NEVER acceptable under any circumstances whilst there is one OAP or homeless person suffering, mental patient and NHS waiting lists in the UK.

If I only find one person on the street on Christmas Day then at least that one person has had a good feed. If they drink beer or whatever it is, then it's probably to put there awful existence out of their minds. Can you imagine having nothing in this world, not an address, no warm bed, I certainly don't think our war veterans want to be put on the streets begging, it's an absolute disgrace. Imagine nobody wanting you. Heartbreaking.Remember the five loaves and two fishes story, supplied by a boy to feed the multitude.True or not who knows.

You are right in what you say - for some it is a choice. My friend does volunteer work with the homeless and this is definitely how some chose to live. The support is their but they reject it time and time again. It maybe uncomfortable to hear but some people will always be on the streets through choice. On what they make their choice is up to the individual.

I shall be careful, but I think every time we step outside the safety of our homes its challenging,terrorists,stabbings it all goes on out there, but we all choose to go about our every day lives and not let the evil beat us. We are brave every day, the homeless are brave, they get abused by d*unks, kicking them, taking what little they have.I wonder how they would feel being abused in that position. There but for the grace of God...

I've had an awful year, but whatever life has thrown at me, there is always someone somewhere suffering more. You cannot grieve forever, mum isn't coming back, my house, it's rebuilt after the fire, after all its only bricks and water, material things don't matter, people do.

Some starbucks open Christmas morning and give a free coffee and mince pie to anyone that is on their own.

It’s awful. My mum works for a homeless charity and some of the reasons are heartbreaking. Avoiding abuse, mental health problems, addiction, etc.

We’re doing a drive next year, with a support group I’m part of, for helping people with mental health issues- packing backpacks with items to make things easier- if we could get just a handful of people, like you, who think as you do, we should be able to make a small difference to people who have nothing.

OP, that is a very kind and generous thing to do.

If you see anyone vulnerable do let them know that Aldi have invited homeless people and those on very low incomes to pick up food from their stores on Christmas Eve.

OP, you might want to ask them if you can have some for your distribution. Also, your local Pret might do the same.

Family have offered me items, but I really want to do this all by myself,they have been brilliant to me over the past year, I'm lucky to have three wonderful brothers. But no I must do this for these people myself.ive become a bit of a recluse really,spend hours on my own, I'm taking one step at a time and this has helped me, as I know I want to take a step forward, so helping the homeless is also helping me. I've got to move on from this trauma. I don't want this sadness or depression, I want to fight it and live the good years that are left. I hope you all understand.

And please everyone, when your phone is charged unplug the charger.. Never leave it plugged in and switched on, that's how I lost everything as the charger caught fire. Believe me it can happen.Forty years of memories burnt to a cinder.

Not leftover food, fresh food he could have sold. One of my best friends says that more if us are kind than are unkind. I want to believe that's true.

After Grenfell Sikh temples fed and clothed hundreds of people, volunteers in every city and town run foodbanks, homeless shelters, work in charity shops and give money and food to people on the streets. Hell I have a woman a quid for her locker at the pool the other day

I work in Westminster near Hyde Park there is so many homeless it’s unreal

We open the kitchen up on a Monday morning and use what ever got to go for a soup kitchen lunch free of charge

Xmas day I’m cheffing it up for 4 hours at a church feeding the homeless it ain’t a lot to give back

There are genuine people out there doing wonderful things for the homeless, giving up their time, so somebody else can benefit,and to the lovely people in the forum who are helping others... A huge Thankyou.x There's an elderly man who sits outside the shop on one of the roads where I live, he's a lovely soul, he dosent beg he just likes people to talk to him. He's my first port of call.These poor people all had a past..

Nice one Pam, if I was closer I would come down and give you a hand. It was was only 6 years ago that I was basically relying on food banks (not homeless though), but I know how hard it can be for some people, especially for those with non drug related problems who just seem to go under the radar

Keep up the good work, and I hope that you bring at least a little love and happiness to each and every one that you meet

I don't think somehow that will be high on their list of priorities. Warmth, food, empathy and not feeling stressed and who knows a total feeling of being lost might be though.

I don’t think it’s a case of either/or. We can fund both but there will always be people who don’t get the help they deserve/are entitled to."

Problem with all charitable assistance is they all come with T&C's those unwilling to abide by the rules fall through the cracks.

Nice thought OP, but family needs to pull together no matter how when times get tough, why not reach out to yours on Christmas day, and feed the homeless on December 28th when all other good will has gone home.

... If I want to reach out to my family I will have to go a long way lol, some are in France for Christmas and others in the Isle of Skye so it's home alone x
