I really, really want to do weights but the idiot trainers just laughed at me and said I should do other stuff involving ropes to grab and leaning forwards and backwards. Not fun at all. ![]() All depends on what your goals are. If you plan to do weight training, you may end up putting a bit more weight. This os because muscles are heavier than fat, and your muscle will retain a lot more water.

"There are benefits to both weights and body-weight exercises (TRX- ropes). What I would say is if you don’t enjoying doing what they tell you to do then you won’t do it so it is pointless. Toning up is best done by doing light to medium weights with higher repetitions, this will give you greater muscle endurance. Heavier weights with lower repetitions will give you greater muscle strength. I hope that helps. " Agree. She could even mix it up by starting with heavier weights lower reps and by decreasing the weight with higher reps subsequently.

Certain times in the month you will lose weight and other times you'd need to do twice as much as a man to do so. Just the differences in hormones find information about that first. Second, it's all about learning the basics. No fancy equipment needed, if you start just lifting weights without warming up properly you will pick up an injury. Third meal prep is key Fourth sleep is essential

"Large majority of PTs don't know their arse from their elbow and are completely useless. There is nothing wrong with the ropes and the like but saying you should be doing that over weights is not very professional. Do what you want and enjoy. Free weights would always be my advice as you engage more muscles over machines but if you just want to keep in shape machines will do just fine. " I would disagree. I could wipe the floor with all of the PTs in a gym a use. I still stand by my statement that the large majority are useless. "Don't be afraid of moving gyms. Honestly. I knew I wanted to incorporate weights into my routine. Went to one gym where I was scoffed at because I asked, in fact the guys words were "but you're an over weight woman, they aren't for you... You want these cardio machines here" I found my PT through word of mouth. She's seen me through not being able to walk 500m (I broke my back many years ago, the doctor talking about going from me using my cane to using a wheelchair kicked me up the arse to doing something...) Now I have done tough mudder, total warrior, do parkrun weekly, snowboard, climb... I'm still overweight but my god I'm fitter than I've ever been... She has worked miracles, and she's the quietest woman, hard as nails but looks like she would snap in a strong breeze... Also wears the baggiest 'hiding' clothes. I couldn't have found a better fit for me. But that's the thing, I had to move gyms to find her. I went from a gorgeous gym/spa to a cheap chain... I pay more now I have my PT than I did before but oh so worth it. " Thank you so much for sharing this and well done you. Yeah sounds like the 2 guys I had. Women don’t do weights.... ![]()

"If your goal is to tone up (or remain toned in your case), you should vary what you do. The body will adjust and adapt so that if you do the same thing all the time it will do that thing very well with the minimum effort, which is exactly the opposite of what you want. As others havd said, if you want to tone you should have high reps, 3 sets of 12 - 15, and the weight you should choose should get difficult at the end of each rep. " Thank you! ![]()

Nothing to do with motivation, just which equipment to use at the gym." Unless you have an injury, theres no reason you shouldn't lift weights. For the most bang for your buck, build sessions around multi-joint exercises (Squat, Deadlift, Bench, Row, OHP). The machines are quite good for isolating a single muscle group you want to work on and may provide useful accessory work around your main lifts. Dead good for helping to prevent osteoporosis too.

"Not sure why people are specifically recommending low weight, high rep, in all honesty. "Toning up" is the process of losing body fat to add definition. High rep exercises are good for building muscle mass when eating in a surplus, and ok at preserving it in a defecit, but you might well progress further doing lower reps in a deficit which can help adherence because you feel you are progressing still. If you are a beginner, good places to start are 5x5 programs. " Exactly this! ![]()
