Ok, the last time this subject was discussed was over 34 weeks ago, so hoping for medical intervention in the intervening weeks.

I am on daily pain meds of Dihydrocodeine 30mg 4 x a day, the most you can take, however they only take the edge off as I need 2 in the morning 2 in the evening, and topping up with ibuprofen in between.

I used to take diclofenac, which seemed to work at the time but they gave me a peptic ulcer so now that is off the table, so what else can I now go back to the docs to suggest trying? Baring in mind I do work full time so can't take anything hardcore, I have had physio, I do my stretches and I have only been offered an xray over 10 years ago, which showed I had degenerated discs, I'm not saying I can't live with the pain but I am getting to a point that I seem to be pill popping as they only take the edge off and I can't remember being totally pain free, now that I would love to experience, even if just once a week!

Any suggestions welcome, so I can make an appointment with the docs.

Can't recommend medicine but can really recommend a water bed. Had many years of back problems, but since getting a water bed back problems are minimal. If we stay in a hotel or come back off holiday, we appreciate how comfortable our bed is.

In the past I've had bad pains in my back. For me chiropractor has worked really well. Now only go once every 3-4 months for checks and minor adjustments. You can try yoga too. A good teacher will show you exercises that will help take the pressure off your nerves.

Lastly: stay active! There's danger in letting the discomfort deter you from getting up and moving. It can become a vicious circle of weight gain and more pain. Push yourself to walk wherever possible.

I'm still suffering after 30 years, X ray didn't show up bone growing inside my spine onto spinal chord, floating in a deep bath is my only respite.

I found Tramadol to be a great help when I was suffering with toothache. Highly addictive though, so not something I’d ever consider using long term.

That is something, I have never considered so thank you! I have gone through so many thousand's of pounds in trying new mattresses etc and I never wake up pain free, so maybe something to consider, if you can have one in a top floor flat? And also with a cat

I have walked into a Holland & Barret store to ask for further information on CBD oil, but they aren't allowed to give out information! So I just don't know where to turn when it comes to CBT Oil x

I know. but they have not been offered! I also know I haven't been insisting, so most is my own fault, I think I need to try and change that, as so far I have been a great patient and did/done what I was told and only I can change that!

u can have acupunctur a needle in each side of ur neck cuting off the nervs from the neck down for 30 mins its how chineas do operations with the paitient chating to the doc as they do surgery

Did the diclefenac work? If so you could either 1 as for it anally or ask your dr to prescribe some antacids to go along with them, which would help with your ibuprofen as well because you're at risk of getting gastric probs with that too.

Failing that seeing a chiropractor, physio, getting a sports massage and depending on what kind of pain it is either hot or cold stick on pads x

I have nerve issues in my legs. The pain clinic prescribed me Gabapentin which works very well.

Perhaps ask the docs to trial that?

It doesn’t cloud me mentally such as Opioids used to.

It's lower back pain and it is constant! Yes I do suffer sciatica some times, mainly down my left leg when it happens.

And Sassy, I am already on Omarprazole, to help protect my stomach, I guess they just don't want to risk it, plus the last time I used diclophenic was over 5 years ago, so my pain has increased so I have no idea whether it would still work ?? I think I am at en pass so to speak

Ah ok. I would suggest you try it up your bum, I do and it's so much better than tablets, its dissolves quicker and no risk of upset tummy x

Has your doctor or physiotherapist ever suggested referring you to a musculoskeletal doctor who could then assess if an epidural injection would benefit you?

Co-codamol and a Chiropractor are my saving grace when my Sciatica flares up, a different type of condition and probably not much help i’m afraid.

The Chiropractor gave me stretches to do in bed to loosen my back up and they tried acupuncture last time i went. I find them better to go to because it’s always hard to describe where your pain is specifically, yet they always find it and work on it.

The heat pads that you stick on relieve things for a bit, but that’s about all i can suggest.

Mrs Skyblue has same diagnosis, degenerative discs. She had operation 13 years ago, which was successful but has lived with sciatica since. The back went again around May this year. Because of the previous prolapsed disc she knew that it was the same issue. Saw GP, got MRI scan very quickly. Got referral and had surgery again in November. Only 5 months between seeing gp to get MRI and surgery. She's recovering now and seems to be pain and sciatica free. Go see your GP and insist on MRI ASAP. The tablets are not the answer.

I’ve been suffering since I was 15 with a bad back.

Believe me when I say I’ve tried everything.

Only things that seem to work is tramadol, osteopath and hot water bottles.

Mine is disk related mainly

It sounds as if I just need to be more pro-active with my own GP which I knew at heart I haven't been but need to start being! They don't know how much pain I am in, unless I tell them!, Sometimes I just need a kick up the arse!

It took my gp 13 years before they took me seriously and gave me a scan and lo and behold I was right all along.

I've suffered with recurring back issues for the last twenty years, following a serious car crash. It's only in the last five years or so that I've discovered the benefits of yoga. The slow, chilled-out, stretchy variety, not the fast, sweaty, punishing kind.

When I do yoga regularly, my back feels both stronger and more flexible. My mobility is greatly improved and it doesn't randomly go "twang", leaving me crippled and wrapped in Cura-Heat pads for days. When I slack off, I start feeling like a hunch-backed old man again.

In short, if you haven't already, give yoga a go! It's not for everyone, but helped me enormously.

I’ve got two degenerative discs at bottom of my back (had them since done my acl in 2002)

I had mri which led to faucet injections over period of few years (max 4 a year at the time) and then in about 2007 I had only slight twinge in back ( I’m bricklayer) but was bearable then in April this year back went again this time it turned out bulged discs which again mri scan confirmed this after I paid for physio ended up paying to see spinal consultant and got some epidural injections which helped and at min pain free apart odd time at work lifting twisting

My advice insist on mri to find problems if can afford it pay to see spinal consultant which will jump mri waiting time

X rays are no good for back issues mri needed to show what issues are and seeing spinal consultant will give you proper treatment

My 1st consultant in 2002 told me do not go to chiropractor go physio and get some stretches etc which did help me while waiting for faucet injections and I still do them in morning to help me loosen up

Also try sleep with one pillow and softish bed as if bed to hard again can cause issues

Above is what I’ve had been told etc and worked for me it might work for you but need mri

Thank you everyone! You basically re-enforced what I already knew, sometimes I just need the proverbial kick up the arse the does something as I will. as I know I can't carry on like this, so thanks to all x

Mr N uses the one from Boots, the highest strength. It doesn't stop the pain but makes it bearable in conjunction with co-codamol

I hope i can help i am in pain 24/7 i have ostioathritis in my foot due to a motorcycle accident i 2003, degenerative vertebrae in my lower back from years of truck driving, and i had 2 whiplash injuries in 2013.As a result i was on naproxen, tramadol,co-codamol,paracitamol,i got upto 70mg of amytriptylne but this did not help with the pain .

so i used to drink a bottle of wine plus whiskey to help with the pain (i was not working at this time)sometimes i went to bed and did not care if i did not wake up .

I could not work due to the pain i lost my job,and my HGV licence as i would not have passed the medicial my G/F left i nearly lost the house .

i have tried chiropractor,craniosacral therapy,acupunture,3 weeks at the pain rehab.

Now i am back workin 2 days a week not on naproxen or amytriptyline i only take painkillers if i need them paracitamol or cocodamol, i use CBD oil make my own Turmeric golden paste ,Kefir,water kefir,and ginger and use a tens machine sometimes heatpads are good .

Have a look at trauma release it helps me

(Lou) I was on gabapentin, tablet form morphine and slow release ibuprofen when I had issues with my back. Ended up having to have an op on it early last year as I had protruding discs, but touch would it has been fine since.

Thats the silliest thing i've read if you have chronic back pain you WIIL NOT BE able to get up and move never mind walk !

And i suffer from it after been in a car crash in the early 90's and been a ex rugby league player and tablet do nothing nor does phyisio

I used to take 'devils claw' along with turmeric tablets for an anti-inflammatory.

Plus I saw a physio for massage too as my muscles would get tight and make my sciatica worse.

You really need to find the exact cause first, insist on an MRI, you can't find the best treatment without knowing what you are trying to treat.

As Diclofenac worked for you in the past that suggests you have a lot of inflammation, which while not the problem, (it's a symptom of your problem) it is probably the cause of your pain.

I have a lot of inflammation in my body and problems with the lower discs in my back and have been able to significantly reduce my inflammation just by changing my diet. It's something I recommend.

No I don't, but the funny thing is, I am not exactly a wallflower lol but when it comes to doctors, I just seem to go along with what they suggest, so I know, I need to change how I approach things! And hopefully I will, when I make my next appointment, but thank you x

Definitely ask about the injection and push for the MRI. Ask if they have a pain clinic you can be referred to as well.

I had chronic disc issues with bad sciatica for over a year, tried everything from acupuncture and visiting and Osteopath. In the end Amatsu massage got me back to full health with my back and I can now walk without pain.

I swear by my chiropractor and I recommend you look for one with a good reputation.

I have to do excersies for my back everyday. I also attend yoga. I know it all costs but it's definitely worth it.

I was due for having an operation for a degenerative disc.

I've gone private though, as the particular place offers a less invasive option that i think is worth trying. (I can go back to my GP again if it doesn't work for me)

You really do need to push for the MRI. When the disks in your back start to go they can push on your spinal cord.

Someone I know had this problem. Was taking oramorph daily with oxi and still was mostly bedbound from pain. After the MRI they switched to gabapentin because some of the spine was pressing into their spinal cord. Instead of just handling the pain it stopped the nerves firing from the preasure and almost completely fixed the problem.

It took years to get to that point. Years of pushing and hounding doctors. It's exhausting but don't give up!

(I'm not a doctor. My spelling is probably wrong but I thought maybe it could give you something to look up)

I haven't read all the posts so apologise if I am repeating someone else.

You can be referred for a private MRI by an osteopath. From memory it's about £250 to £300.
