To be fair he has probably tried the flattery thing a few times before and it got him nowhere, so he tried a whole new approach.

Everyone is different and you never know what the correct approach will be. Not fab related but I know a fair few people that are together that started with a joke, an argument, a misunderstanding. Keeps things fresh and it certainly made him stand out much more than just another questionable compliment would have done.
