west here ford shire

So looking to work for myself next year, I’m an engineer technically good, but I can’t do much physical work anymore.

I do earn some money for sourcing engineering products in Asia, but now on my own it’s more difficult to find new clients, this year it bought in £5-6000

Last year £16000

I have money in bank and no real debt

What am I good at?

Besides being a pretty good all round engineer, I am fairly good with building timber buildings, decking, I am ok painting and decorating and a not bad artist, done murals in the past.

I am experienced in driving and transport, negotiation, import export, stock control and identifying problems in businesses ..

All previously done in my career

So any ideas ???

Why do you want to work for yourself? Your skills sound suited to big companies where you could manage/ mentor projects. Working for an existing company would possibly be less risky/ stressful than looking for your own clients?

If you decide to take that path, it wont be an easy journey. I am still waiting to meet a successful businessman/woman who had it easy. You need to be competent in resilience, commercial, financial people and a sound understanding about you market. Prepare to take some big punches on your way, but you cannot stay down if you fall over. You need find that strength to stand and keep going day in and day out!

Having been self employed for most of my working life & had to be employed for the last five years personally I much prefer the self employed option. I'm currently trying to find a way to work for my self again,it's only the regular wage that's keeping me there. So best of luck op home it works out for you.

I like these conversations, even more over a pint or four.

I would start by thinking about how much you need to earn, how your personal circumstances will affect your options and then start thinking generally about what you want from work. What do you enjoy most/least about your current work?

Ive been self-employed for 20 years. I have a very niche job which means Im sought out, can set my prices and often get very interesting jobs. I chose job satisfaction & free time over lots of money.

Is there no way you could work out a way to source more clients?

Sounds like you have a good angle there already which could work with a little tweaking?

For a % you can have my business idea as a Used knickers trader,

Shy people could PM you on fab with the name of the person they'd like to purchase knickers(or boxers, for the ladies) from.

To test your negotiation skills you could expand the offering and make big money by telling people you'll get anyone's used knickers for a price ££££££ although it might end up with you trying to persuade boris Johnson to sell you his for the really X rated clients

You contact the person and persuade and negotiate a price for then to send them to you where you then put a hefty mark up on them and post them to the pervert(oops I mean customer)

No need to thank me

Build stuff, sell it on eBay. Or buy stuff resell it on eBay.

Alot of people do this and it does pay well
