Do you have a government gateway account? Wherr you file your tax reclaim on line?

If so they might message you to that account

I recently received an email saying I was due a refund but I didn’t respond to it. It does say if you don’t respond within 10 days they will send you a cheque. And guess what? I’ve got a very healthy cheque thank you very much

Be careful with emails and letters. If they've never used your email address it's unlikely to be HMRC.

Don't ever call the number on the email or letter before checking it's genuine.

Mine doesn't say anything about 10 days, just you are due a refund of.....click on the link to verify.

Theres a fake posting scam I only just read about today. Apparently you get the "sorry we missed you" postcard from PDS(parcel delivery service) with a number to call to get your parcel sent out again. It's an 09 number which hits you for 300 something pounds as soon as you're connected.

I'd ignore it. HMRC knows where you live if they really want to give you money. If I get anything that doesn't look right from HMRC I call my accountant. Like the claim for a pre-payment that had already be made.

North Bucks

Did a stamp duty rebate via the post. Had to ring up in the end then write a letter of complaint before finally getting the rebate. Not the greatest customer service in the world

It is not unusual for me to get refunds due to the nature of my employment, but I have always had a letter before.

They send a letter informing you that you have a tax refund and giving you the option to go on line and give them your bank details. If you don't five them bank details they will send you a cheque in 6 to 8 weeks.

If it is legit they will write a letter to you

I thought it was odd. My accounts are due in January 31st, so I will find out then. I'm guessing they are trying to hook people wanting extra money in time for Christmas.

If you ring the HMRC there is a recorded message asking if your are responding to an email about a refund, if you answer yes the message then tells you that they never ever send emails regarding refunds and invite you to forward the email to their phishing dept.

Last time I enquired when we had a local office was that they'd only send letters.

There's also a scam letter going around now & if the number is used that they state in the letter it's a premium rate & they sting you that way

I don't think HMRC ever send emails about personal or business tax matters. They will send emails about new taxes, systems etc.

If the subject is about money you owe or refunds, in my experience they always write letters.

Tax refunds are letter only. You get a ten day period to get online through Bacs in three working days or if you miss that or ignore it then after 40 days they send you the refund via cheque. Emails claiming you are due a refund are scams.
