"Got the box set bought for me a few Xmases ago and I usually watch the entire trilogy at least twice per year. Looking forward to watching The Hobbit when it's released too. There are two Hobbit films being planned, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2014), but as Hollywood likes round figures I'm expecting a trilogy of Hobbit movies too. " The Hobbit 3: Revenge Of The Hobbit?

"Someone told me the battle cry in the film is a recording of the barmy army cricket fans..is this true." not heard that but i doubt it. multi million pound production costs would mean specialist sound recording. but i may be wrong.

"I loved the books, they are amongst my favourite ever reads....but I don't believe they would ever have been able to pen a screen adaption without writing substantial changes to the original text. " There are some changes they really didn't have to do (Faramir taking Frodo to Osgiliath was completely pointless) but most of the changes were fine. The first and third films were great. Two Towers was less great but the book had its problems too. I reckon Peter Jackson did an all round great job on it.

"these and the star wars original trilogy are staples of any bank holiday weekend for me." I'd rather go to B&Q. Star wars is shit, except for the little bloke who talks like a d*unk old gaji and word backwards gets them. And guess what? I knew what the Lord of the Rings trilogy looked like - I used my imagination, and the films don't match up.

They're OK as movies, but I always have trouble with adaptations of favourite books.

"I loved the books, they are amongst my favourite ever reads....but I don't believe they would ever have been able to pen a screen adaption without writing substantial changes to the original text. " Of course, you are right Jane. There are things that just couldn't have been transferred to the screen very well, but Flight to the Ford is not one of them! The whole point of that part of the book was to highlight to tension as Frodo rode on Glorfindels horse, racing with the pincer movement of the Dark Riders. All that riding round trees and rocks when in the book it was a tense dash to the Ford of Bruinen, with five riders behind him, two heading for him from the front left and the last two headed to the ford to cut him off.. Reading that as a youngster and feeling the breath of the Black Rider, as could Frodo, as Glorfindels horse passed before them at the ford had me excited and frightened.. Playing some game with the Black Riders in trees and rocks, takes away the tension and makes it look like a jaunt in the woods! And even in the film, Elrond would never let Arwen (Evenstar) ride forth to the rescue of Frodo, when in a later part of the film, he is almost possessively protective of her about going to war! Yes, I know I am anal about the book(s) but I have been reading Tolkien since the age of 8 and LotR since 12. Brilliant books and well written. I do think Peter Jackson did a good all-round job of making the films, but I do agree with the comments made by both Awayman and Femme..
