We are sure there will be a very good reason for this.

Why do you have to show photo ID when you book/pay for your hotel? Not everywhere but the last 3 hotels we have.

Iv only ever had to do this when staying at a airport hotel.

Most of the hotels near Heathrow for example say on their websites that you will need photo ID when checking in. I'm assuming it has something to do with security.

kinky land

Twice in Berlin,

Hotel in Tunisia took a photocopy of my passport on arrival, and it was an ai package

Every hotel I've looked at in Miami and on the keys have got it stated that they need to see passport of lead adult at check in so I expect it to be a thing every time now.

Not sure but I suppose it is for fraud prevention.

Also I should think If they discover anything nefarious or illegal happening in the room then they can trace back the person who booked it.

Its usually if you are paying cash. Otherwise they accept credit or debit card as a record of whoo you are.

Hilarious. No stereotyping there then. Whatsoever. Really!

Oh that's the one I was thinking of as it states on their website.

We always pay online too but it said it in the confirmation email too.

Yep. It’s apparently one of the very few hotels in England that will turn you away without it

It may well be a security thing, maybe they have had problems, or dare I say PC illegals.
