Wrong Sort Code

In the Guardian a man sent the wrong sort code to a solicitor. Over £190000 went to someone else.

Barclays denied responsibility and the recipient wouldn't pay it back.

Basically British banks don't match bank details to names.

All sorted now but only after a lengthy and costly battle.

So...be careful!

Nightmare!

It's an offence to knowingly hang onto that money as a recipient I do believe!

Well, yes but once it's being spent it isn't so easy to make them hand it back.

If I put the wrong sort code in when transferring money and it doesn't match the bank account number it gets rejected.

This is why I always double and triple check the numbers before I transfer any money. Sometimes it pays to be paranoid!!

Blimey! What are the chances of that!?

If I'm transferring a large sum, for me that's anything over a fiver , I double check the numbers. If I was transferring that amount I'd double check then get someone else to check

This is why the extra checks are being introduced. The roll out was halted earlier this year. My bank gives me a warning before I can make the transfer now. For any new transfers I have to go through the verification code process.

Mine does tooI, but that just lets me confirm it is me transferring money. If I thought I had the right bank account that I was sending to then I would answer yes that is me.

I do get paranoid though and triple triple check where any money is going, one day it will time out before I can !

The test amount that someone else mentioned is a good idea

I pay by cheque. I’ve only had to do a bank transfer once, I went to my local branch and got them to do it so if there was a fuck-up it was there fuck-up.

It was particularly risky, as 2 customers were at different branches in the same town, with the same account number but the sort code was almost identical, with just 1 number that was different.

The banks were due to introduce name checking automatically in 2019 but are late with it.

The customer told Barclays within a couple of hours that a solicitor had paid the credit to the wrong account. His father had died and he was being credited with his assets.

It seems remiss to have near identical account numbers etc in the same town, as someone could just have written Cambridge as the branch name, and it could have looked correct.

I wasn't aware that a bank account number wasn't specific to an individual account. It seems such a basic thing.
