Feeling old

Tomorrow my first born turns 19.

He's 6"3 and doing really well for himself. I'm incredibly proud of him , his brothers and actually myself since I've raised him singlehandedly most of his life.

However I'm sat here feeling old. I know in years I'm not but it's a feeling.

Looking at my life and reflecting.

Lonely , single , quickly approaching middle age and in the eyes of some probably past it to be the love of their life.

Is this something that everyone experiences?

Certainly is, I get this at Christmas time in particular and my birthday. I have to keep my mind off it as best I can otherwise the depression clouds gather and come for me.

I think once you reach a certain point it's natural to reflect and there is certainly melancholy involved from time to time.

Sending some positive thoughts your way

You're a year younger than me and I don't feel old often! But then again I don't have kids to measure my age against. I can only go by your pics but you don't look old either!

Yes, at some point. Your life experience of creating an adult can be put aside now. Go back to your actual age and enjoy yourself. The years go by quicker.

There are people on here and elsewhere just starting out at your age. You are just a bit younger than my oldest would have been. That makes me old and you not old.

What can you do to help with the loneliness? Do you have time and ability to join a club or a choir? Lots of things start in January and you might meet new people, make new friends and find your energy and enjoyment again.

There and to the left a bit

I think it's something that most of us experience at some time or another after passing our mid-thirties but the reality is there is still a whole lot of life ahead of us - even at 54 I can see there is still a lot to experience and enjoy - yes I have my moments of uncertainty and reflection where I look at my life with a wistful eye and wish it had turned out differently but for the most part I am happy and take a positive outlook.

It will pass and come again this feeling, do not hide from it, greet it as you would an old friend, pour a glass and welcome it in, and in this time of reflection let yourself know that life has never been measured in years, but by the deeds of those we have nurtured

You're doing fantastic, don't let the dark clouds descend, go find your sparkle you are still young. I constantly fight these dark clouds but refuse to let them engulf me. I'm a single parent of four, ages 22,20,17 & 16 and am so proud. xxx

I’ll be feeling old in just over a week as I reach the dreaded cut off point for lots of people on here- I’ll be 41, so past it to many, haha.

I just recently turned thirty and started freaking out a bit tbh so I get ya I will probably freak out again in 10 years but the upside is I will be an older bear type guy by that point.

I will be swimming in younger vajayjay and and meat sabres. and you are certainly not past it my dear ;p you are also in the prime of milf age which is probably the most popular demograph of male fantasy enjoy it xD

You may feel old, OP, but you look amazing.

Age is just a number. When you are 80 you'll be amazed you ever had these thoughts at your current age.

You aren't alone. I kinda felt it tonight being at a 21st birthday party. Don't get me wrong, I can still enjoy myself, even without drink (had the car) but missed having a partner but realising me being the love of someone's life is very slim also...

Huge hugs xx

You've reached a milestone in your life, you're bound to reassess things. You're feeling that the best is behind you and that's probably a natural reaction to seeing your son with it all before him. It's natural to feel this way.

It's not over until it's odd and as my dad who's in his mid nineties says "you've got to love until you die".

You probably do feel old today, you might still feel old next week but you aren't, you have a lot of life left to love

Hiding in the shadows

My eldest son was 27 last week, my baby girl 24 yesterday.

I'm 50 next year.

I've done a lot of reflecting over the past few days.

It's quite scary!

I felt old and quite unnerved for a month or 2 after I turned 40 this year.

But it didn't last long and I realised that ages we considered old 15 or 20 years ago are really not old.

Loads of parents and even grandparents nowadays living the same life as a 20 year old!

Plough on and you'll feel like 20 again in no time! Its a whole new world

OP...you are 36.....certainly nowhere near middle aged!! That would make us OAP's.....yikes....what a thought.

But yes, it is strange when your children grow up. When our eldest left home aged 18, to chase his dreams, I was very emotional.

But be proud that your child has turned into such a great young adult.

It's always strange when time marches on. My son is getting stressed about being 30 next year. And my ex husband about turning 65 I'm just happy to be alive still. Nice house, friends, kids, foster grandchild on the way, car, motorbike ok, not my BMW 650cc lowered for my tiny dwarf legs, or my dream Honda Rebel 500cc - but 2 wheels and an engine). We've got lots to look forward to and lots of stories to tell. All will be Fab

I am 56 and in the last 3yrs my life has changed dramatically and at times I have felt a bit lost but it gets better. You obviously have strength in what you have achieved with your family and are appreciated on here.

As for the love bit, never say never. This year I met a man who I fell for totally. It wasn't to be but just to have experienced that instant intoxicated feeling again was worth it and at your young age I'm sure you will.

Count your blessings as it sounds like you have them a plenty!
