It always makes me think of one of my dearest, most long term fwbs. "How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people". What I've loved most about Fab is that I've met men that I'd never have met otherwise because our circles are so different. You get to peep into each others lives and it's nice

Everyone I know who's seen them says the same. I love them to bits. I used to drink in a snooker club run by Daves brother, they're from Edmonton which is very close to where I grew up. Rain is wonderful but Revolver showed variety. Yellow Submarine could be seen as a psychedelic post nuclear view on survival. Genius.

I have different favourites depending on my mood. I love Revolution, Tomorrow Never Knows and Across the Universe, but all are very different.

I also have a real soft spot for the two songs that were released as singles with the Anthology albums —Free As a Bird and Real Love. I know they're not the Beatles finest works, but they're the only two released as singles during my lifetime, so it's the closest I'll ever come to the excitement folk must have felt at the time when the Beatles released new music.

She's Leaving Home from the Sgt. Pepper album. But strictly speaking, this isn't "The Beatles" as neither George Harrison nor Ringo Starr was involved in the recording and it was one of only a handful of Beatles songs in which the members did not play any instruments on the recording

""There's a Place" 2 minutes (yes, just 2 minutes) of pop perfection. Juat listen to John's mournful harmonica and the sublime harmonies. Bliss.

"I have different favourites depending on my mood. I love Revolution, Tomorrow Never Knows and Across the Universe, but all are very different.

I also have a real soft spot for the two songs that were released as singles with the Anthology albums —Free As a Bird and Real Love. I know they're not the Beatles finest works, but they're the only two released as singles during my lifetime, so it's the closest I'll ever come to the excitement folk must have felt at the time when the Beatles released new music.

out of those 5 can you pick a favourite? "

OK, at a push, revolution

Thanks I've added it to my highly scientific spreadsheet.

There and to the left a bit

The thing is there are very few acts that virtually single handedly defined the way music would be shaped and influenced - The Beatles were certainly one of them and their influence can be felt in everything from pop to punk to rock and a whole lot more in between.

Sure there are others, Bowie, The Stones, Queen and the likes of James Brown and even Bill Haley and Buddy Holly etc but The Beatles probably had the biggest influence of all

Do you know what. You are absolutely right. They defined the rock band as we know it today. 4 piece, singer, guitarist, bassist, drummer. Wrote their own songs. Before that it didn't really exist.

I grew up in the punk era, many "old" bands were slagged off but never the beatles. Even on here to listen to the variation in music over 8 years, no one can match that

Exactly - their music evolved over time from the basically "boy band" rock and roll they started out with to the more progressive stuff they ended up with - not many bands of that time did that, even the Stones stayed pretty much to a formula that worked, only other one I can think of who evolved quite so dramatically was probably Bowie.

To take an earlier point The Beatles would have existed without Elvis but many bands that followed would probably have not existed without The Beatles (step forward The Jam/Weller, Oasis, Blur to name just three off the top of my head)

It was quite cool to "retro" like the Beatles in the late 90s. I can remember my mum telling my mate that in the 60s, the Beatles were the kind of shite your mum approved of and if you were in any way cool, you liked the stones, and if you were cooler than that; the Yardbirds....

Pretty much every band since though those you mention were directly influenced sound wise.

Buddy Holly/Crickets established pretty much the 4 piece band we know today (singer/guitar, bass, drums) and wrote their own songs. The Beatles were directly influenced but wrote some incredible music (and really also introduced the 5th member, the producer).

Apart from incredible songs, as we've seen here, they created the format for every band since.
