"The perfect example of terrible story writing and how to kill a franchise." I couldn't agree more and I'm not at all excited or interested in the new one....they messed it up too much for me to care anymore.

"Why focus on this one so close to last film's release? " Because I was thinking about the last film and realised I've stopped caring and it's all due to the last jedi. So wondered if I was alone. So what about you?

The VERY beginning. It was so different to anything I'd seen before. It was a huge thing to go to the cinema to see a film like that (we were very poor) and I was already hooked on fantasy and SF. "I thought it was quite good. Admittedly once you get over the excitement of seeing Luke and Leia again it doesn't hold up against the great Star Wars films. But it's better than the phantom / clones / sith... There's a couple of people on this forum who list it as their favourite. " Wow really I thought this was worst of all of them.

"I think a lot people forget that Star Wars films are kids films. They're not made for adults, they're made for kids. When people who saw the films as kids see the new Star Wars films now they're like "this is crap. the film before made me lose interest but x character wouldn't act like that..." The film will never live up to the sequels you've already thought of in your head. Everyone thinks they could make a better Star Wars films but it would really just be crap. Just my opinions. " I could make an amazing star wars movie though haha

The director/wtiter Rian Johnson wanted to make a bigger name for himself by "defying expexpectations" he has all but admitted he wanted to destroy what came before. JJ Abrahams said he had a brief outline of where his plot points in The Force Awakens were heading (but nobody at lucasfilm had any idea how it was going to end). Rian ripped that shit up, pissed on it and then shredded it. Every single thing he added in TLJ was done to shock and awe, the latter failing miserably. The most universally hated star wars movie, the second most hated star wars character, Rose Tico (not the actresses fault). The most anti climactic overhyped villain, and the worst choreographed fight scene in a big budget movie. That's just the tip of the iceberg. The rise of skywalker can't do any worse, but it sure as hell can't do any better when it has to continue what TLJ gives it going forward. When you test screenings have people walking out. When the confirmed leaked scripts are getting utterly ripped apart by how bad the writing is. And when reshoots and editing changes (confirmed) are happening as late as they were, there is no new hope for the final part of this once beloved saga ending well. The fate of the star wars franchise now soley rests upon a Mandalorian and a baby "yoda" buddy cop TV show.

I'm still looking forward to see what appears on the screen. I've seen the worst film ever made (not Star Wars related) so it would have to fail stupendously for me to feel it was an utter waste of time.

"Question - putting aside the bad script writing of last Jedi, do you think people aren’t liking 7&8 because the original characters we grew up with are being killed off one by one and individuals are struggling to like the new characters ? " I think that's exactly what it is. I read an interview with Simon Pegg years ago. He was talking about the prequel films,I can't remember how many of them had come out at the time. He was saying how bad they were and just wanted the original cast sat around a table talking about Star Wars... and then he makes an appearance in The Force Awakens!

" The way the old characters are now portrayed and killed off is frankly insulting. The new characters aren't appealing and are one dimensional. Again, a problem of story writing which hasn't added any depth to them. I'll stick with the originals and even the prequel trilogy and give these new films a pass (rogue one the notable exception).

It again comes down to the writing. Generally it all comes down to the writing, and what direction the actors are given.

This is true, but also when you pull shit like the last jedi, don't expect even the more passive ones to sit and keep quiet.

Maybe it is the others got into my mind as a child and what I grew up with, Star Wars was a wow for me when I eventually got to see it. It’s hard to replace characters like that. I think that’s why I like Rogue One, even though you knew what the ending was going to be, it was a great prequel to Star Wars and those characters got under my skin.

Oh no forget the anakin trilogy, can’t stand them. The third one just about bought back a little bit of credibility, but if I never watch those three again I’d die a happy woman

"I (Luke) grew up on Star Wars (and it's where I get my Fab pseudonym from). I loved it. I have found this sequel trilogy very disappointing. I will go and see episode 9 out of curiosity but I'm not expecting to like it much. Episode 7, for all the hype, was just a rehashed episode 4. JJ Abrams was highly unoriginal with it. Rian Johnson made various bad decisions with episode 8. I don't see bringing Abrams back for episode 9 is going to save it. The original trilogy was a labour of love for George Lucas. The prequels for all their faults were a story he wanted to tell. This sequel trilogy has the appearance of being a business venture - an opportunity for Disney to cash in. It has so little soul or imagination. Disney has made a right balls-up of it. " To be fair, while Disney does have the final say etc, Kathleen Kennedy either as a pawn or dictator has actually caused the majority of the issues with star wars in the Disney phase, you just have to read and hear what she says. Just look at the Mandalorian TV show, and even the loved kids show rebels. Both of which she has had little to no involvement with and because of that they have had more praise than the movies (rogue one aside)

"A recent interview from the Head of lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy. She said "with these new movies we had no stories to adapt from, we didn't have any reference, we were going in blind" not a direct quote but along those lines. Which is all bullshit. They had 30 years of loved and adored expanded universe stuff to go on. Novels, video games etc. George lucas even gave them a script he had been working on before he sold lucasfilm to Disney. They threw that away! And then got him in as a consultant for the final movie near the end of shooting when they realised it was not going their way. " True. But she’s honest they have no idea... 7/8 are like predictable copies of 4/5 - no imagination I already have a bet with my lad that the last one will see Rey discover she is Kylo Ren’s sister and he saves her... blah blah

"Love it Seen it Cried I’m a geek and very proud " Phew! We're booked for Sunday and I am getting nervous. The teens have re-watched all of them ready for this. I keep being shocked every time someone on the telly, radio or press say it's 42 years since the first film. It was such a big deal going to see that film at the cinema for us. The queue was so long and you couldn't book ahead back then.

"So I'm taking my son to see the new Star Wars Can I expect something like the first one that blew my mind as a child or is it going to be weird like some of the follow ups that I couldn't sit through to the end ? Is it stand alone or by missing some will I not understand it ? Thanks all" So I began here asking about last jedi but I've now seen the last one. I knew last jedi had ruined star wars and I was correct. I knew JJ Abrams will do a good job making a decent movie and would do what he could but the damage was too great for him to save star wars and it's obvious and it shows. How? The makers of star wars claimed fans were happy with last jedi and only a select few were disgruntled but rise of skywalker shows they took all fans criticism seriously and tried to give a movie the fans wanted and thus tried to save star wars. You wont get the same buzz as the first as it's too late now. It's a decent movie but as a star wars movie all it could do was to work with the colossal mess of the last jedi and try to save what it could. My understanding is that Kathleen Kennedy and Disney and thus Lucasfilm had no plan for these 3 movies and it shows and what an absolute dumb move! The special effects and actions are good but nothing at all in this movie will stand out or make you go wow. Stick to marvel for that.

"For me Last Jedi was marginally better than this latest one.. so many plot holes in both. Enjoyed the action in both, didn't like the diversion to the rich planet in last jedi, didn't like the story in this latest one. Found myself not really caring for the newer characters, although Adam Driver did his bestand was probably the most developed character. Latest one 6/10, Last Jedi 6.5/10, Force Awakens was 8/10 for me but tried too hard togive fan service and I got the feeling no-one had a clue of a three film arc. This latest one could have been better had they started it with the death of Leia rather than putting those scenes with Carrie Fisher in that didn't work. Really liked Rogue One 9/10 and Iactually really enjoyed Solo, 8/10 on that even though it got panned." Agreed rogue one was so good! I'm not a fan of mandalorian unfortunately though. Just bored me.

"I loved it... It tied up a lot of the loose ends... paid homage to a new hope... had a twist I wasn't expecting... han solo was in it... and the millennium falcon saved the day again... what's not to like... " The main thing I didn't like is that it didn't make any sense. Why would somebody create a dagger to show the way to the way finder rather than write it down or just get the wayfinder? Why were there ways of finding a way to the secret planet of the Sith (not very secret)? How did Palpatine survive? Is he just going to come back to life and say the force can do unnatural things again? If Rey can lift rocks why could she not pull everybody out of the quicksand? How were the shields of the Sith planet penetrated so easily and the imperial Fleet not get out? Why didn't they just switch the shield off and fly away when it had been penetrated? How did Rey bring down the ship with Chewie on it and somehow it wasn't the one with Chewie on it? There are just endless questions. Then there was Rey's ability to bring people back to life and Palpatine's resurrection. This mean anybody who you think it dead or fatally wounded can just come back to life. So don't worry if somebody gets killed. It's always reversible. Now you can do anything with the Force from healing things to fighting mass space battles. It used to be a special skill and now it's just a plot device to do anything. The whole thing was a mess as far as I'm concerned and full of lazy writing. They tried to baffle me with fantastic visuals and constant action, but ultimately this whole trilogy has been really vacuous. Luke (and yes, my Fab pseudonym comes from Star Wars because I love the originals)
