So I've started to plan a little holiday of sorts with my dad. We will be going to Dorset for a few days (primarily to visit Bovington tank museum) and I was wondering where in Dorset might be worth a visit. We will probably go to lyme regis to see the Jurassic coast, but are there any other museums or curios worth visiting in Dorset?

The tank museum is brilliant. Very well worth a visit.bits one of those places where the ticket lasts a year, so you can even come back again in the summer and they quite often do live days where they drive the tanks around outside.

Other places to visit, depends on what you like.

Historical stuff .

Hardy's cottage is not far from bovington that's interesting if you like historical, as us corfe castle and awesome views from the top. Kingston Lacey estate, nice house, lovely gardens. Bradbury rings is an interesting hill fort.

A lot depends on where you are staying, Swanage is a typical seaside town and is reasonably quaint, but this time of year can be a bit quiet.

If you like steam trains you can go from corfe to Swanage on the train, that's nice.

Poole quay is nice for a stroll along, few pubs there as well, best thing is to park at baiter and walk to the quay.

Hope that's something to go on, if you say what sort of things you are looking for might be able to help further, walks, nightlife, cars, coast... The Haynes motor museum is near Yeovil and that's really good.

Aha, I see now you did specify museums.

Well Poole quay still has a bit of history if you look hard enough and the Poole town museum is where the quay meets the high street and is quite nice, not big though.

Beaulieu motor museum in the new forest is really very good but costs a lot to get into. For a single visit it probably is worth the cost though I would say.

Bovington is excellent, especially on the tankfest days when they have the exceptionally rare Tiger 1 driving around the arena. Don't know what else there is around there though.

Oh yes, well done, I had forgotten about that one, it's quite eerie there, very interesting place to go see. The church has been kept up together and they have restored the schoolhouse which is interesting, there is also a nice walk down to to sea cliffs from there.

I deliberately dont want yo do tank fest or tiger day as I'm not awfully keen on crowds. Was going to go late may/early june.

Not a museum but just down the road from Bovington is Monkey World which is well worth a visit if you're interested in primates. It has great naturalistic enclosures and large groups of chimps and orangs which are endlessly fascinating.

And if you're looking for somewhere to stay in that area there's a wonderful campsite literally a field's walk away from Monkey World which has lovely glamping tipis and shepherd's huts as well as camping pitches. You wake up to the calls of gibbons coming from Monkey World, it's that close. Check out Longthorns Farm

I forgot.... Abbotsbury Swannery is another idea, providing you like swans of course. It's a spectacle with many hundreds of swans and if you're going in June, loads of cygnets too.

What sort of accommodation are you thinking about?

If it's hotel, there isn't a massive choice in poole, the usual premier Inn, Travelodge type of places, there is a hotel down on Poole quay, so convenient. Not a lot of people know but you can book into the rnli training centre, it's a bit like a hotel, nice rooms and great views, the restaurant is also really quite good. And again, good views.

Weymouth is more of an old fashioned seaside town so lots of Fawlty towers type hotels, Bournemouth is the same.

Not so keen on monkeys but thank you both for the suggestion. I think I would feel uncomfortable interacting with creatures better looking than myself

Yeah I gathered that there wasnt a whole lot of choice down there hotel wise, but I did find a lovely hotel on the Weymouth beach front that looks nice. Where ever we pick has to be motorcycle friendly though.
