They need to think this race again. It needs to be run in at least 2 heats a few weeks before the main race if they insist on letting so many horses compete. 40 is to dangerous.

One of the horses that died was the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and it's owner will be reeling from the loss of stud fees he would have got from it.

The owner's know the risks they take with their horses in the National, but the horses don't have a choice in it. I think it's time the fences were lowered enough to ensure no horse dies jumping over them, but will that be a guarantee as horses die on every course throughout the season.

Horses die jumping hurdles let alone fences.

Either leave it alone or ban it. there's really no middle ground

That would be impossible as its not like the olympics. They have made a lot of improvements in recent years such as heightening the landing side at Bechers brook and also redesigning the rails so that horses can `run out` if they want to ( as some did today and yesterday )

They have also restructured the entry criteria so a horse has had to have proven itself over 3 miles or more in previous races before they qualify to run in the national.

Very sad to see those two (or any horse for that matter ) being put down.

I backed Hello Bud to get a place at 50s.....came 7th.Ah well, theres always next year

Yep

I backed Always Waining Ante-post for the National last year and this year too at pretty good odds on Betfair. Dilemma for the connections for 2013 is should they go for the national or for 4 consecutive wins in the Topham.

Tell you who I thought was really interesting.... Swing Bill, jumped really well, just ran out of puff- don't know his age or form, but he looked after himself over the fences and his jockey got him out of a potential fall on the second circuit really nicely... would like to see him there next year, if he copes with the distance... not sure if the going favoured him or not.

Synchronised - Updated statement from the stable shows it wasnt the actual fall that caused its injury....

"In the race he jumped more than adequately in midfield until over-pitching at the sixth, Becher’s. It was not a bad fall, he got up and galloped on jumping the fences rather than opting for the bypasses. Somewhere between there and the Anchor Bridge crossing he fractured a hind leg and was humanely destroyed. There will be inquiries and reviews into his death and 'bad luck’ is an answer which will not satisfy. However, by anyone’s opinion, surely a loose horse damaging himself must be considered unlucky"

Yes from what i noticed he never went over the fence when you seen the full race afterwards in slow motion, he kinda refused and stopped before going over so it must have been something to have caused that, so sad that it happened to both horses

funnily enough the horse i picked in paper came in 1st lol and i also got a 5th place also lol...just a shame i never put them on....would never put 50k on a horse though as someone did that for syncronized

I'm not surprised, the horses have enough trouble jumping the fences as it is without having to do so with a hard on.

I get really bored with one day a year animal rights activists who bleat about the grand national.

Without national hunt racing these horses wouldn't exist - they'd be dog meat as soon as it became clear they'd never win a race on the flat or have a life in three day events (where horses also die...)

So why do people only bleat on national day? Do they not give a toss the rest of the year?

Excuse my ignorance about race horses, but why do the horses that break legs have to be put down?

Are they always destroyed or is it possible to fix their legs?

I can imagine they wouldnt race again.

Due to their weight they can't be kept immoblised for the period needed for recovery.

There's no way of immobilizing the leg.

Tell me to put my foot up on a stool, or to use crutches and I will.

Horses won't.

Some vets have tried immobilizing horses by using slings; the net result is usually colic, which kills the horse anyway (it's not the same as the colic your kids get...) or pneumonia, which kills the horse anyway...

Whereas my friends and family accept that the death of horses is a risk in just about every equine sport except dressage, which barely qualifies as a sport at all...

if you side with the likes of the RSPCA against the GN you have to accept that they won't stop there, and drag hunting, three day eventing, point to points and extreme races will all be in their sites as well...

Oi don't knock dressage it aint that bad... Well I suppose spent my childhood being dragged around looking at dressage horses... Expensive things once you train them to PSG level... Every sport that involves horses is dangerous.. but like people are saying if the horse is not used in sport it will end up as dog meat.. My uncle lost a really good horse.. However he did say he was one of the most bravist horses he knew..

I'm pretty sure Mill Reef broke a leg and wasn't put down. But then he was an entire colt and a Derby winner. So the stud fees were obviously a factor in whether to shoot it or not

Cars & motorbikes can be rebuilt and suffer no pain when they're wrecked. Humans can go kill themselves doing extreme sports if they CHOOSE to do so, and tbh, I couldn't care less about any human who dies pursuing a sport, but there is no need to make fences so dangerous that horses die trying tp jump them - just to make horse racing more interesting?

The welfare of the horse is usually the overriding factor in these circumstances, making sure there is no unnecessary suffering...

Money is also a factor, but so is the kind of break a horse has... generally when a horse breaks its leg on a racecourse its done quite violently, not like a hairline kind of thing, which are possible to treat, sometimes. The period of immobilisation needed creates other problems, colic for one (horses can't be sick so when the have digestive problems it is serious) and pneumonia is common too, again, the size of the horses lungs is a factor!

If a mare breaks her leg then her breeding potential may be taken into account, but if she is going to have a weak leg then her ability to be mounted by the stallion and carry the weight of the foal growing inside her is also a factor.

It is usually about the kind of break they have and money though.

if a bike is crashed in a gp and serious damage is done it gets written off and replaced... just like a horse who breaks their leg.. the horses didn't die on the grass did they.. they were put down because they broke their legs...

its a shame but that is what they are bred to do they are a business investment for people..

do you eat meat? same principal.. lambs are grown until they are ready to be butchered.. then they are sold off for you to eat.. if they get ill they will be killed earlier because its not worth the investment to make them better for the return they would get so the lamb is written off..

a broken leg can be fixed on a horse.. but its not worth the cost to the owner.. so they get written off just like a motorbike...

Like i said its sad.. and its a shame that such beautiful creatures have to be put down but that's how it has always been.. now they have more humane ways of putting them down instead of a gun to the head.

and as someone said before if the horse didn't want to jump it wouldn't.
