Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Today was the day that mixed sex couples could apply for a Civil Partnership.

Did you? Would you?

Wouldn't marry (or similar) again for anything, no. But have straight friends who refused to marry until anyone could.

Seems it should all go both ways.

What's the actual difference, anyway?

Nothing for some people and everything for others.

I have straight friends who felt they had to marry even though they are opposed to the institution of marriage. They wanted a civil partnership but it wasn't available to straight couples.

Technically, it means that friends living together or in a long term supportive relationship can enter a partnership to inherit from each other and get each other's pensions.

You don't even have to put a ring on it.

You and your partner would have the legal protection but without the faff (hopefully with a faf, though) and the vows.

Exactly, and seems that's the reason so many actually get married these days. I might get around to it before I die, solely for tax purposes.

I still don't quite understand why there's marriage and civil partnership? Where I'm from (US), they are the same--it's a legal contract wherever it's done. Thank god it's mostly now accepted that same sex couples have the same rights as straight ones.

Civil Partnerships were offered as a compromise to same sex couples instead of granting marriage. Now all the forms are equalised.

Remember that if you get married or have a civil partnership it revokes your existing will so all your assets automatically go to your new partner and not to your children unless you make a new will after your union.

A will is something that should always be reviewed with any changes you make in your life

Yes. Yesterday was the first day that straight couples could register for a civil partnership.

I'd never get married or similar again. I'm far too cynical now.

But for others that want it? Good for them xx
