It's December and I'm not feeling christmas at all, feel low and I've even volunteered to work Christmas night as my son what's to stay at his dad's. I'm not in touch with family due to them being toxic and all this time of year do is remind me of that fact. Who else out there struggles with Christmas.

For me, Christmas has lost its sparkle since my mum passed away 4 years ago. She loved Christmas, just makes this time of year hard. I do my best to still try and enjoy it, but the songs make me sad, putting my tree up isnt as magical, and i miss the chaos of mums home at Christmas

I know the feeling, the ads on telly telling us how to have the perfect Christmas makes me sick. But Christmas is what we make it! I think deep down we all secretly love Christmas.

OP, working at Christmas is great gift to give someone else. That seems very Christmassy to me.

It can be a difficult time of year, even for those who appear to be in the bosom of their family at the time. So much pressure is piled on us to make it all perfect, to replicate something that we see in films, on television or on ads - none of it is real.

Take a moment for yourself, it doesn't have to be on Christmas Day, and do something for you.

Get outside when it is light and top up your vitamin D.

Not a fan.

Work all through, don't see friends or family.

Can't stand getting spoken to like shit and accused of ruining someones Xmas meal coz they've booked a table for 10 and turn up with 13. Not my fucking problem mate, I can't magic extra chairs and tables from my rectum no matter how hard I try.

Truth is, I want to be making memories with those I love, and yes, I'm envious of those who manage it

Years ago, the family would all get together, do the meal and the gifts, all the things. And it was... y'know, nice. Forced, a lil' bit. But nice, I guess. Or maybe we felt it was nice.

Then, some years back now, cancer hit the family home. Like it has hit many. And we couldn't have that experience for a few years. It's wasn't possible, or it wasn't right, depending on health at the time.

Thankfully, it passed. It got beat and there was relief and tears, all that gooey stuff. And a Christmas came around again.

And the fam just turned around and said "yeah, but... let's just say balls to it this year and bugger off to wherever we like?"

My folks went to Portugal. My brother, to Australia. I was in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen. We collectively had a bangin' crimbo.

Since then, some years we get together and some years we bugger off. It depends on what would make us happy and content that year. Which, around this time of year, is a real big thing to aim for: to be happy and content, if you do Crimbo or not.

I enjoy it in my own way. I love sparkly things and coloured lights so I love the decorations. I've spent it alone a few times in recent years and found it painless enough. I adore the food, I love everything in a Christmas dinner but I'll be with my partner and will probably end up cooking steak. I loved it as a kid and a teenager and it was nice when my son was little sometimes but often got ruined by the pressure and obligation people have described. I'd take being alone over dutifully celebrating every time.

I don't particularly enjoy it as much as I did when I was younger as I don't get gifts anymore since I'm an adult and I'm expected to work shit out on my own. Plus I no longer have friends to enjoy it with. So to me it's just another day.
