White coat syndrome

west here ford shire

So recently I had a TIA ( mini stroke)

Initially medical staff thought it maybe the reduction in size of the arteries in my neck after the interview radiotherapy in my neck and head, (something that will occur eventually)

But no.

So they pointed out my blood pressure was very high, I explained I get white coat syndrome, which they said couldn’t be the case to bring my pressure up that high.

So I had to monitor my blood pressure over 7 days, picked up the machine a couple of days later, monitored my blood pressure over that period . I noted each reading every day Tom results back to the doctors, I said “my blood pressure is fine” the response was you had a high blood pressure count on the Wednesday morning, yes I said because I had a hospital appointment, told you I have white coat syndrome...

Does anyone else get this problem? if I have to go to a doctor, dentist or hospital my blood pressure goes through the roof..

By the way, still unclear what caused the TIA, still waiting on a brain scan over a month after the stroke..

Not that I'm aware of. I'm pretty good when it comes to all things medical, I'm not even scared to go to the dentist (the price puts me off).

Dave certainly gets White Coat Syndrome. Been on blood pressure tablets for years (having had various 24hour monitors on) but if we have to see a new doctor - up goes the blood pressure again!

(we also discovered recently, that caffeine & Ibuprofen can increase it too)

Sorry to hear about your TIA. We hope the cause is found soon and gets sorted. The male half here has "white coat" issues too and has had to do the weekly home checks after high BP readings at the GP etc. We've found some GPs to be sympathetic and knowledgeable to this problem. So, you are not alone!

Hope everything is OK OP.

I suffer from this too, despite working in a white coat for a large amount of my life. My blood pressure goes through the roof. It's the not being in control of the outcome.

I do nowadays, yes. Didn't used to though. I have to see a doctor tomorrow who absolutely terrifies me for some unknown reason and I know my blood pressure will be sky high and my heart will be jumping out of my chest.

Where you're concerned op I think it's understandable.

I monitor my husband's blood pressure on a regular basis and take the results into his GP on his check ups. It is always much higher when taken at the GP or hospital, so I'm sure it exists. Good luck OP

I get exactly this Stella and it’s unbelievable. I take videos of me taking my blood pressure at home and it’s normal- 110/80. As soon as I go to the doctors it’s high. Last time it was 225/140

I have it too. I hate the feeling of the cuff tightening around my arm which then probably raises the pressure.

I have a home device to measure my pressure and I have to control my breathing and do my best to relax. I also take two readings which can have differences.

Wow. That certainly is high ! I apparantly have white coat syndrome although I feel totally relaxed and not anxious so I don't know why it happens.

Yes! I don’t think I’m overly nervous either...

Mr Bicpl here - yes, I've had white coat syndrome for years: it's a recognised - as in real - effect. My BP, taken at home, is nice and normal. Resting pulse rate between 60 and 65...get to GP's, pulse rate 90, BP 165/95...and my Dad was a GP, so my body should know better, but...

Mind you, perhaps it;s the drive to the surgery that isn't helping

Hi yep I also suffer with high BP due to white coat syndrome and it's apparently worse when it's done using the digital machine (as it inflates a lot tighter and left me with bruises on my arm last time) compared to when it's done manually with stethoscope and pump. xT

You should not be taking ibuprofen with hypertension that needs meds

I would have it even if she took the white coat off and was standing wearing knickers and a bra.

I often suggest To some of my patients do at home readings. They do always ask for it doing when they come In and then argue when it’s high but a lot look a bit peed off when I suggest they spend a tenner on a machine.

White coat DEFFO exists!
