got a hotel booked close to tower of london on a friday and saturday night, drive everywhere normaly but told not to do it to get there as will be horrific ?

I took the family for a long weekend and went on the open top bus tour the first day to get a feel for where I wanted to visit and how to get there then bought underground tickets the following days.

BTW, the bus tour tickets are hop on, hop off and are valid for 24 hours so if you jump on at 1pm you have till 1pm the next day to use it too.

people don't drive in central london (congestion charge) so the underground and the buses are absoluetly fine and do the job... if you are not going outside of central london, you'll only need a 4 zone travelcard, and you can jump on/off trains and buses as you please

about 1 mile outside the congestion charge area from most directions you can find cheaper parking. but these days unless I am on a motorbike I would stop right outside London it just isn't worth the stress and time it takes.

if you are driving from Birmingham I would seriously consider giving up at Oxford!

Once you're in zone 1, you're in walking distance of most places so don't be so keen on forking out for a travelcard unless you're venturing into the greater london area.

Ok. It's not 5 mins but it's a nice long walk along the river and you don't see the best parts of london underground.

See if you can get an oyster. After 7/8 pounds, it becomes a travelcard for the day anyway and single journey in and around the capital are £2 each.

Congestion Charge only operates Mon-Fri, 07.00 - 18.00. If you are coming at the weekend it won't affect you so if you want you could drive in, park in an NCP and have the car handy for when you leave.

Don't do it.

Boris is intent on turning it into a downmarket version of Monaco for ugly people. It's a shithole that I have seriously fallen out of love with. All the good businesses that I loved in my youth are closing down or turning into tourist attraction parodies of themselves.

They're digging up huge chunks of the centre again again to try and address the schizophrenic reality that millions of people want to work in London but they'd all rather live as far away as possible. Judging by the plans for HS2 some of them would even prefer to live in Birmingham, the only place in England with an accent more irritating than Mockney.

driving round there is a ridiculoíus idea. plus roadworks on the M1 will delay that part of the journey too.. realistically it could take longer once you get off tthe M1 to get toí central london than the 100 miles to London will take.

catch the train from snow hill half the price amd not that much longer than out of new street.

If you must drive, leave the car somewhrre outside the ,M25 much less hassle.

I usually park in Muswell hill near the Roseview hotel as there are no parking charges on the roads there.

Then jump the tube into the centre !!!!

Personally I wouldn't bother driving from Birmingham to London....I'd get the train in and hop across to Tower Bridge on the tube.....

The buses and tubes aren't anywhere near as busy at weekends and you can get around using these at a reasonable cost.

The walk along the embankment isn't a bad walk at all, particularly if you have fine weather.

I am sure you will have a great weekend.

My family still live down there. If I'm going any where down there. I park my car at my dads And get bus and train or tube everywhere...

As long as you avoid rush hour its fine... I would never ever drive there.

You may be far better leaving the car well outside London (maybe outside the M25) and using a train in.

Parking is a mare anywhere within the M25 area…. very very lucky to find free on street parking thats walking distance to a train/tube station…. but would assume the further away you go the easier.

I worked down there for 6 months…. where possible I left the car at the hotel (in Hounslow) and tubed/bus/trained it everywhere. Only used the car when I needed more kit/tools than I could carry.

Parking was circa £30 to 50 a day.

If you do drive towards the centre, watch for the C charge. It is well signed several miles away and on signs/road when you get there. There is however a route through the zone thats free as long as you dont deviate off that route (North to South, cant remember the road names that you need but its well mapped on the official C Zone map)

Watch out for crazy bike and motorbike riders, they come at you from all angles…. dont matter there are cycle lanes, they use as much of the road as they can.

I used to have a base in central London, and would strongly advise leaving the car at the hotel and use public transport to get out and about instead.

The Transport for London website has an excellent journey planner and is easy to use.
