"horribly offensive,in my opinion" No worse than Father Ted, Faulty Towers, Open all hours, Porridge, the IT crowd and a hundred more. I thiught it was well done.

"horribly offensive,in my opinion No worse than Father Ted, Faulty Towers, Open all hours, Porridge, the IT crowd and a hundred more. I thiught it was well done. " i agree..on another forum we have been having a discussion of the "does he take sugar" view of disability, the idea that one cannot portray a disabled character because that in its self is offensive is the worst kind of patronizing prejudice. Gervaise created a positive character who showed up those around him, the scene in the pub brought tears to my eyes and we cheered when his friend headbutted the girl being nasty. Putting disabled people on a pedestal and saying they cannot be portrayed in comedy does no one any good.

Was well done, not rose tinted same as in life.

"wanted to watch it, but had to work, however, had it on a phone in program on the radio and VERY few people said it was rubbish/insulting/insensitive. many shared the view it was heart warming, genuinely funny and didnt ridicule the 'disabled' at all. hopefully will be repeated or be available on the internet somewhere so i can form my own opinion, but i generally dont really like Gervais." I saw a bit of it and loved the dialogue, which seemed genuinely well observed, but watching Ricky Gervais act is like watching the members of a cargo cult try to charm a plane out of the sky. He knows all the actions and tricks, because he's seen other people do them, but he's still just Ricky Gervais, just like the air traffic controlled in a cargo cult is just a bloke with headphones made out of coconut shells...

"Can't stand ricky gervais. He might be a talented writer and producer but think he should stay behind the keyboard and cameras and let the actors with talent play the characters. " Totally agree, I cannot see what's funny about that man.

"I enjoyed it and will keep watching. I don't know what genre this could be advertised under other than comedy but unfortunately people expect belly laughs with comedy. I thought it was more pathos/tragedy/observation about life and only becomes 'funny' or 'comedic' through recognition or realisation. It made me think of Jo Brand's 'Getting On' , a series about old folk and the state of the N.H.S. I think i'm going to find it compelling. I take on board everything everyone says about how Gervais grates and annoys. I agree but he's so much more he can laugh and be irritating all he likes. I'd like to work with him or know him. Him or Merchant. Pilkington I want to do other things with. ( Dont' ask ) The episode last night couldn't have failed to have moved the least empathetic. It touched on every conceivable emotion. It mirrored characters that we avoid every day of our lives. Love him or hate him he's original, daring , creative, unafraid, adventurous , intelligent , funny , successful and many other adulations. Yes he does creep me out too. I like the way he sticks his neck out and doesn't stand still. He could have kept doing the office - he didn't. He could have kept doing Extras - he didn't. He could just stick to stand up or compering or writing - he doesn't. He's diverse and has purpose. He's very socially minded and uses his skills and talents to make political statements and what is most important is he's humble about it. UNDERestimated. No he doesn't pay me. Should do though. " And on next weeks Fab review Granny will be selecting her choices from the newly dicovered Alfred Hitchcock's Debbie Does Dallas (the shower scene is something to behold!) That is a hard hitting line, id like to think as i have a disability im able to show more empathy with my client's and i can relate to them when they get down. The world/life is a cruel place. Intriqued to watch this even more.

"just watched 15 min on 4oD, Crock of shite. At least the undatables is true story about their quest for a relationship. Derek was just taking the piss, behaving as if he was special needs." It called acting...

"I thought it was beautifully made, moving and funny (Karl ). I loved the subtle elements such as when he went to knock on Joans door, I get the feeling there something deeply personal to Gervais about Derek." apparently its his oldest character...what that means is of course impossible to say.

Why is it taking the piss ? Are special needs people so goddam precious we have to pretend they don't exist and just not have them seen in public ?

"I'd review a snuff movie if you'll be the cadavar in it .... go on be nice to me." Granny, Granny, Granny. I may play the cad for you, I may even play the fool but I shall not play a cadaver (correct spelling) just so you feel at home or on a meet. I understand at your time in life you feel your need to prove yourself to others and that you are of interest and share your vague thoughts and the proud achievment in reaching such a monumental age. I also realise that you so often get mistaken for a stiff at the local beetle drive and bingo hour at the community centre. Your reviews of the macabre and dark filmography only reflect the dull soul you posess in watching such grim tales in which you take the only pleasure in you have left. Listening to Hitler's speaches on your gramaphone whilst you view old black and white photos of open graves and the holocaust as you laugh hysterically may be entertaining to you, even a turn on, but for once just try to turn that frown upside down and put a smile on your dial. Is it true you have bought some crotchless knickers so you can get a better grip on your broomstick? Anyhoo, have I been nice enough to you? I'll understand if you don't reply straight away as you may be having your meals on wheels and incontinence pants changed. Bless you x

"as you say, he is just a comic, not a comic actor. there are people i can see that, when acting, you forget who it is and emmerse yourself in the character, but whether its brent orwhatever, it really is JUST gervais" I think that about gets it said for us too. Its hard to believe in the character because its so hard to forget its Ricky Gervais. Even Karl Pilkington, who has little or no experience of acting, became the caretaker. We weren't offended by it in anyway, and there were some genuinely touching moments, its just that its hard to separate Gervais from Gervais, even though he did have a look of Russel Crowes Maximus with his fringe slicked down.
