The term is a medieval/Tudor term for a person who dug out/cleared privies/earth closets/cess pits for disposal or use as fertiliser.

Also known as nightmen which is where 'night soil' comes from.

Basically a shit-shovelling bog cleaner!

Oh for goodness sake...

Yes it's a medieval term. The gentry in the castle would go to the toilet. (drop a gong) in a glorified hole in the wall. The gong farmer was the poor bugger who's job it was to find it/them. Pop it/them in a bucket and deposit it in a field.

I know its a crap name but it makes me laugh and surprisingly never taken when joining any network on line
