Vitamins for women (mainly)

I'm interested which, if any, vitamins you ladies take. I've just started taking omega 3 and vitamin D as I read that those 2 are particularly important and 'every woman should take them'.

Don't be left out guys you can join in to, unless you make pervy references to calcium!!!

La la land

Depends on your requirements and your diet also. Generally a good multivitamin should do it. Check the back of the packets often own brand have the same composition as the well known ones at the fraction of the price

I don't take any.

Most people don't need to take vitamin supplements and are able to get all the vitamins and minerals they need by eating a healthy, balanced diet.

Exceptions include women thinking of having a baby who should have a folic acid supplement, as should any pregnant woman up to week 12 of her pregnancy. Some groups of the population (people who are not often exposed to the sun – for example, people who are frail or housebound) are also at greater risk of not getting enough vitamin D

Other than that extra vitamins are just creating expensive urine.

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

Vitamin D would certainly be at the top as most ppl in the UK are deficient due to reduced exposure to sunlight. Its extremely important for the immune system and essential for fixing calcium to bones (this last bit very important for pre menopausal / menopausal women.

Since the mentalpause hit a few years back I've had to take quite a few! I take 2 multivitamins with minerals, 2 iron tablets, vitamin B complex, evening promise and if I remember 2 black pepper and turmeric tablets! It seems a lot but I notice my energy levels falling fast if I miss iron, the multi vits are to help absorb iron and for general health. Evening primrose for night sweats, B complex and the others for the mentalpause! They do seem to work for me though.

What do the black pepper ones do?

Ps I meant to say they're not needed if you have a good diet...

I actually ordered black cohosh to help with the brain function during menopause but ended up with these! Good for general health and the immune system.

I do have a very good diet generally but noticed I was getting anaemic and exhausted all the time so started with iron supplements and multi vits, just added the extra as I've needed to.

I’m drinking a rather nice cup of vitamin B6 Raspberry tea.

Also supplement Vit D and Fish oil.

Since I started swapping out the immense amount of coffee for herbal tea I do feel better.

Vitamen D is very important as you can't absorb calcium without it. So you can take as much calcium or calcium rich foods you like, without Vit D it wouldn't do any good. This is particularly important at menopause, perimenopause, had a hysterectomy and so on to help avoid osteoporosis.

Apparently we should all take Vit D October to March as we don’t get any from the sun during those months.

I take glucosamine too, and a multi vit, I’m not sure the multi vit does anything though.

I’ve recently gone veggie(only one source of meat goes in my mouth now ), so I’ve had blood tests done to check levels.

I’d say keep taking it. It’s not the benefits you see it’s that you don’t develop osteoporosis early in the main. You can’t really overdose on either so the benefits long term are the goal

I take fish oil (omega 3), flax oil, k2, d, b12 and a supergreens organic supplement with wheatgerm...

I sound like a junkie. Never used to take vitamins, but as I'm currently on a particularly gruelling fitness routine, I'm trying to see it will help me feel better.

I also try and have at least two epsom salt baths a week for the magnesium.

x Niki

No worries lovely, it may help with that too but it can take a while to see the benefit. The bone health I’m kinda passionate about and you may not know till too late so good to start ASAP. I always thought we made vit D in daylight but it’s direct sunlight. Being a redhead I avoid that 99% of the time lol x

If you’re taking D (a very important ‘vitamin’) you need to take K2 as well.

Most women benefit from magnesium too.

Check out Ivor Cummings on Vit D.

Definitely with the vit d, you've get benefits you don't see & you'll feel less lethargic.

I have osteoporosis & I'm not even mid 30's, argued with docs for over 10 years about a vit d deficiency & they just kept giving me anti depressants, which I didn't take cos that was not the problem. Mine is severe & coupled with being on the contraceptive jag for over 6 years didn't help either. And I was outside Alot then as I had horses, still do get out enough, make sure I get at least an hour per day. My body just doesn't seem to produce it unless it's by over 20o sunlight which is rare in Scotland.

Zinc & magnesium are both normal.

I take a vit D + B12 combined spray when I remember (should be daily really)... A lot of the milk I drink is fortified with D + B12, so i have pretty good levels
