It's complex. Anything posted on social media that could potentially influence the outcome of a criminal case eg. By disclosing information directly relevant to the case that may not be in the public realm or by detailing the previous convictions of the person on trial could influence a jury, for example, if it is likely they could see it. Social media/blog/forum moderators always have to be on top of this.

However, simply commenting on the case is generally acceptable outside of the restrictions above.

For that reason newspaper social media posts on ongoing trials will block comments

Exactly. Any system will make mistakes, both intentionally and through bad practice.

But at least a legitimate system has a form of redress and reconciliation.

I dont see that in the alternatives driven by emotive and subjective processes.
