What makes a good forumite? As a relatively newbie to the forums, I'm unsure what it all means in all honesty. I can see a wide range of people with diversity of opinions, some are funny and playful. Is it the eclectic mix so there is no right answer? And how do we make it more inclusive for others to join?

You've already answered the question.

It's diverse with different personalities, you can't have a 'perfect' personality or attitude to join the forums. Just jump in, be yourself and be nice to others.

As for how we can be more inclusive, that's not going to happen. There's too many people, too many friendships and too much built up prejudice, for others not to feel isolated at first.

Is hard to jump in sometimes, and I still have no clue what's going on in some threads. Guess it's time and patience

I think being respectful and tolerant of views that aren’t necessarily the same as your own is a good start. If you have this as a basic human quality, I don’t think you can go far wrong on here.

I think the second part of your question is more difficult ... inclusivity probably flows from the above. So if we can all start with basic respect, maybe we become more inclusive.

I’m waffling. Tell me to shush

But you'll get there

I don't think there is one particular thing; different people like/respond to different people differently (that was a fuck ton of different, apologies) and you're never going to please everyone are you?

I do think that you can be a more welcoming forum user (rather than *good* because I dislike the notion) by engaging with others, being respectful even when dealing with opinions that differ from yours and being authentic to who you are. And enjoy it! The fora can be fun and it can be an interesting place to learn from others.

Up North

Don’t be frightened just to post your own personal opinions. It can be frustrating when you are seemingly ignored whilst others highjack the thread talking with just each other. But. Come back in a few months. Those people will have gone to be replaced by a brand new group.

I post my opinions based on what the OP has posted and let the rest go over my head x

It’s the “thick skin” part that makes me do this:

I have good reasons. I’ve spent years working professionally with people with severe mental health problems (in particular men) who were told to “man up” and have “thick skin” as kids. As adults they aren’t sure how to deal with their emotions and feel it’s wrong to have them. Therapeutically, this is hard to work with and “undo”. Hence my dislike of it.

But, flipping it around, it can also be helpful as a way of encouraging resilience I suppose. You say potato, I say ........ etc.

I’ve worked with men who’ve attempted to take their lives because they’ve been told to “man up’ so many times they genuinely don’t think it’s ok to not be ok. It’s a damaging phrase for sure and something I advocate strongly about in my work.

I think the ppl I admire here the most are the ones who talk with their brain, engage others and ask opinion rather than talk just about themselves. If you make a point of being polite to everyone, especially on your own threads, and thanking new ppl for commenting I think it goes a long way.

Nothing worse than watching a person being ignored because they're the wrong sex or not traditionally beautiful or haven't found their forum confidence just yet.... ....its really good to encourage the shy ones because often they're the funniest when they come out of their shells

Nothing worse than watching a person being ignored because they're the wrong sex or not traditionally beautiful or haven't found their forum confidence just yet.... ....its really good to encourage the shy ones because often they're the funniest when they come out of their shells

"You've already answered the question.

"

I agree with this (This is George). I’m still fairly new to the forums, and it is difficult sometimes to feel part of the conversations. But many of the people have been connected for quite a while, and I have had privilege of chatting to a few people privately and made couple of good friends in the process. Pretty much all the people here seem to be really kind and generous, which is Fab

Without sounding too much like a cheesy cliche, being yourself

Some days I like the serious discussions, some days I'm in a silly mood, some days I fancy a good old flirt! I've only been an active forum user these past six months (discovered them when I was laid up in bed) and initially I did find it a bit daunting. Everyone seems to know each other, the running gags etc... But the longer I stick around, the more I enjoy it, and I've made some friends too.

How do we make it more inclusive? I guess joining in and contributing to their threads, without ripping them apart for the amusement of the blood thirsty pack?

It's very hard these days to create unique threads, so maybe new people are what's most needed? It's also very demoralising to have your thread crash and burn with no replies, but ultimately just contribute. This place is nothing without people of all types. It's why I come back.

I've been participating in the Forums for years and most of the time feel unnoticed. It's not just newbies that can feel isolated or ignored. Early on I realised that the confrontational threads weren't for me as I can't express my feelings very well with typed words so I avoid them. Everyone is different here, some funny people, some total dicks which is a little how families are made up. Everyone plays a part.

"We should have a vote and see who's people fave forumite is, my monies on either me or NSA chick or whatever the name is

Eww let's not.

Why

A thread of narcissism, people up each other's arses, cries of clique and hurt feelings.

Dunno what narcissism means, everyone likes there arse licked, clique on the forum ? I would never believe that and of people's feelings are hurt because they're not someone's fave forumite maybe they should look elsewhere for social interaction

Narcissism is a personality trait defined mostly by a sense of entitlement, overly inflated sense of self-importance, and a need for admiration by others.

Oh so me in other words thanks for clearing that up

That’s the definition. If you identify with it, then yes it’s you.

Of course I'm the biggest attention seeker on here

Not to get technical but... attention seeking fits more with a histrionic personality. You might be that instead. It basically depends how much you love yourself with it

I'm sorry I'm confused now lol but I do love myself also maybe I'm just an arsehole

Haha. You’re a nice mix of narcissistic and histrionic then.

I don’t know what makes a good formumite, but I imagine having studied and worked within the field of human psychology and personality for the past 12 years probably makes me an unpopular one "

nice to have a bit of depth to my character, you're so brainy and hot my brain has discombobulated

"I've been participating in the Forums for years and most of the time feel unnoticed. It's not just newbies that can feel isolated or ignored. Early on I realised that the confrontational threads weren't for me as I can't express my feelings very well with typed words so I avoid them. Everyone is different here, some funny people, some total dicks which is a little how families are made up. Everyone plays a part. "

I notice you.

We are just being ourselves. Always very pleasant and respectful with a touch of humour when we can.

People will either like us or they won't.
