Under the Duvet

When I was a kid this was a BIG treat for dessert.

Tinned peaches were the standard, fruit salad was the favourite and we would all fight over who got the cherry (there only ever seemed to be one in the tin!)

What were the pudding choices in your house?

Does anyone even eat tinned fruit anymore?

Eurgh. That's brought back memories of tinned prunes and custard!!!

Hated that fruit cocktail with a passion !! I can remember my nan putting it in her trifle... with blancmange. So awful.

"Homemade cakes "

My nan used to make great cakes, but there was generally a cat hair or two in there somewhere.

She also smoked like a trooper and generally had a fag on the go, so no doubt a sprinkling of ash also

Cold tomato soup from the tin. I kinda grew up on that and jam sandwichs. I still prefer tomato soup from the tin cold

Still love tinned peaches and pears, was never a fan of fruit cocktail

Other than that it was usually a lemon meringue pie; strawberry sponge based flan with whipped cream; a cake my mam had baked; ice cream with ribena mixed in to make raspberry ripple; artic roll; or the frozen mousses that you were supposed to defrost but never did

My house was really poor when I was a kid, so getting pudding was a treat in itself, and tinned fruit was usually what we'd have. Sometimes 30p for a shop sweetie, which could get you a couple of things back then. I still love tinned pear halves or quarters!

We had 2 puds we loved, but both made from suet so they were a rare treat, my dad used to make a golden syrup suet pudding and a jam roll poly.

And I honestly cannot to this day pick which of the 2 is my favourite.

But I've asked my dad to make jrp at xmas cause I havent had it for maybe 5 years

Likewise.

My grandmother didn't have a fridge until the early 1970s (my dad bought her one as a Birthday present).

She used to cook an extra helping of dinner for an elderly man who lived at the other end of the road; I was the delivery service when we were staying.

The quick dessert at home was tinned fruit, usually fruit cocktail with either condensed or evaporated milk. Very occasionally we'd have dream topping or angel delight. Gran used to do a trifle for special occasions, or jelly but as mentioned further up this thread, served with bread & butter. Didn't think it particularly strange at the time, but now I think about it. ..

My paternal grandad worked for Walls ice-cream, so we had every ice-cream flavor you could think of.

Maternal grandma was a baker so homemade cakes and Jamaican breads / sweets

Only had pudding at my nan’s as a treat. She made a lot of puddings from scratch, rice pudding, custard slices and jam tarts etc.

My fave was her trifle. It had everything in it and it was amazing.

These days i like tinned rice pudding, tinned peaches and pineapple chunks (all in juice not syrup). I still like a trifle but they’re not as tasty as my nan made.

I use tinned peaches for overnight oats. Porridge, Greek yoghurt, peaches and a drop of either honey or choc shot. It's gorgeous.

I so get this! Or hot puddings, eg apple pie and cold custard! You can eat it quicker as the cold custard cools the hot. I've had cold beans, twice in last week.
